10 most horrendous boy band music videos of the early 00s This list brings home some of the worst examples of what can happen when the boy band formula gets a little out of control.

Boy bands seem to rise as quickly as they make their exit. Usually propelled by the undying loyalty of teen girls, these over-processed and hyper-marketed groups of adorably stereotyped guys singing falsetto and marveling at each others’ biceps is a formula as old as The Beatles.

Yeah, we said it: The Beatles were the first boy band. And though they did not make this list, there’s a little bit of John, Paul, George and Ringo in each one of these videos.

This list brings home some of the worst examples of what can happen when the boy band formula gets a little out of control. Here are the 10 most horrendous boy band videos of all time.

B4-4 – Get Down

B4-4. Get it? What’s before 4? Three! Three guys with tans out of a Gene Wilder film. This is the crown jewel. You find a better boy-band music video and…well, you can’t. We’ve searched. There isn’t one. Even their other amazing video for the song “Go Go” can’t compete. How did this video come to be? According to Wikipedia:

After spontaneously walking into Sony Records’s Toronto office, the group performed for the CEO of Sony USA, Howard Stringer. The trio was then signed to the label, and the album B4-4 was produced.

From the opening shots of a young boy wandering onto the creepiest beach in history to the Oompa Loompa tans on the singers, this is a visual treat. Add the chorus lyrics “If you get down on me, I’ll get down on you,” and it isn’t hard see why Howard Stringer signed them on the spot and was later promoted to CEO of the entire Sony Corporation.

E-Male – We Are E-Male

“We are E-Male, we just, can’t fail,” so the lyrics go–with the play on words with e-mail and the fact that these guys are, we’re led to believe, male. It’s so ridiculously clever, they must have had a hard time swallowing each other’s disappointment when this song did, in fact, fail. Bonus points for the roller skates.

O-Town – Liquid Dreams

Generated from a reality TV show produced by the man who brought the Backstreet Boys and ‘NSync to life, “Liquid Dreams” is a song about explosive emotion.

You see, they couldn’t sell a song to teens called “Wet Dreams” and were forced to get clever and call the song “Liquid Dreams.” The video features the guys in a “liquid” world. Yikes. A song about ejaculation and a futuristic video with guys essentially inside the wet dream itself? Did we already say “Yikes”?

New Edition – Cool It Now

If only Bobby Brown had heeded his own advice and cooled it sooner when it came to…oh…alleged domestic violence and alleged illicit drug use.

Dream Street – It Happens Everytime

This was the start of Jesse McCartney. It wasn’t promising.

LFO – Girl On TV

It’s a song about being in love with an actress, a video of three guys basically just sitting on a couch and you get the idea that they’re all somehow involved with her. Is this at the same time? Do they each take a day? How does it all work out? And here’s a fun fact: the girl on TV in question is Jennifer Love Hewitt, who actually dated the lead singer of this train wreck at one point.

5ive – If Ya Gettin Down

It’s typical boy-band fare–guys in military clothes dancing in a warehouse. Singing to each other about getting down. Fire blasting behind them. Try this: Imagine that each fireball is actually one of the guys’ farts being ignited.

Blue – Too Close

I don’t know who did it first, but watching Blue’s “Too Close” after watching Next’s “Too Close” is like chewing the rusted bumper of an ’87 Oldsmobile after a long winter of eating chocolate cake. It’s horrendous. Enjoy.

Boyzone – No Matter What

White suits like the Backstreet Boys? Check. Uncle Remus-looking guy in a hot air balloon? Check. Girls? Who needs ‘em? We already have everything we need for a love song music video.

JYJ – Ayy Girl

According to Guinness this was apparently the biggest boy band (by fan base) in the world. Ever. They’re from Korea, and this is their attempt at an English crossover. The worst part? Not the white suits, but the Kanye West guest spot. What the fuck.

  1. I wasn’t so crazy about JYJ’s MV either because their past MV’s (as TVXQ! <3<3<3<3<3) were very stylish, and appealing. So the expectations for them is VERY high… Of course their vocals are the groups true appeal… they are a vocal group NOT just a boyband. Get it right… Also, remember folks THEY ARE *SINGERS* NOT MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTORS lol. Say what? Yes, that's right… I could care less what their MV’s look like. As long as they continue singing like angels, I’m all for JYJ! XD BUUUUT! With that said it wasn’t all THAT bad of a MV.. Geezz. And as a fan I don’t find it acceptable to allow others to talk the ill trash about them in anyway at all. If you're going to talk shit on TVXQ/JYJ/Anyone of the members, Just know that you are stepping on the feet of 800,000 + (give or take a few cassies) fans from all over the world. I actually like the dance sequence ,it was very dynamic, with nice swooping shots, and interesting backgrounds; granted it was some poor CG work-_-;; These bois have some serious heart. They work their asses off, and have gone through a lot of BS to get to this point… Please show them some respect as Asian artist trying to make it in America. But then again this is just a bias troll sight anyway– at least it seems that way. so I don't know what I’m expecting by saying this. Just know JYJ are true STARS~ hell yeah i'm going to be supportive!

  2. LOLS! all these comments are seriously funny to read. I’ve been sitting here for about an hour and i’m starting to get bored, not even half way through them xD Anyways, getting onto my point. Not trying to be a hater or anything, but i find it personally to be Kanye’s fault. I’m not saying I hate him or anything, hes pretty good, but not that great… I don’t see why they chose him, of all the artists out there… I’m not so big on the song… and the mv? Epic fail. But it’s not so bad as to be posted as part of the top ten most horrendous.. ^_^ loools Yes, i’m a cassie, but no, thats not why i’m saying this stuff. cassies need to calm down. no harm was intended LOOOLS also, i’m not trying to be mean or anything, but… as ppl have said before, it was dbsk who held the record. get ur facts straight before you say anything ^^ So, anyways, check out some dbsk stuff on youtube. you’ll be wow’ed. The album overall was awesome, but not kanye’s song… sorry.. should’ve debuted with ‘be my girl’, i think they chose kanye’s song though because he’s more known(???)

  3. I was going to come here to bash the crap outta you guys, but my fellow darling Cassies have already done so. So I think I’m going to be civilized. I guess there is no point in taking this website seriously (sorry to any fans of smoking jacket) but I actually thought that smoking jacket was an actual band or something, or an official site that influences American music or something like that. But in all seriousness, “Why Robots with Vaginas are a Bad Idea?!” Yeahhhhhhhh… so yeah, now excuse me while I sit here and laugh at you guys while reading my Cassie’s comments~ Please don’t take their bashing too seriously. You’ll learn from your mistakes won’t you? You can diss American music and all, because Americans have a very wide perspective and are accepting like that. But never, EVER diss bands like JYJ, because us fans actually care to the max. And therefore, our bite is deadly~ just a warning! Peace~ <3

  4. Hey, i actually couldn’t understand your critics about JYJ. What’s their biggest mistake again? Maybe the song the videoclip but nooo…. Kanye West? Are you crazy?????!!!! What would you do if u wanted to get into the american market and you were ASIAN???? Of course, u’d like to be helped by one of the biggest producers in US. I knew the american market would be like this, PREJUDICED!!!!! Just like it is with foreigners. Sooo i reckon to make good points JYJ has to put on some jelwery, gold and have some skankies shaking butts or, maybe, form a band and start to knock head on the walls. U don’t know how talented they are, really! It’s not just another boy band, that’s so, they are in Guinness. Think about it! Maybe u should look up a little more about them before posting nonsense. U REALLY don’t know how a cassie look like!!!!!! Let the red ocean rise!!!

  5. I must admit, JYJ’s MV for Ayy Girl (and the song itself) sorta sucks. But Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu (and Changmin and Yunho) ARE SO MUCH MORE TALENTED THEN YOU WILL EVER BE. They have the BIGGEST fanclub IN THE WORLD, and they’re one of the most internationally known non-English groups in the WORLD. They’ve had so much success and they would be so successful as DBSK (Dong Bang Shi Ki) if JYJ hadn’t left. As to the person who said ‘go read a book fangirls’ WTF? I’m a straight A student, the second-best in my Advanced school class (we do 2 grade above ours work) and I know 5 languages. English, French, Korean, Japanese and Mandarin. Don’t assume all fangirls are batshit crazy because WE’RE NOT. We’re defending our favourite artists because they DESERVE IT. They’re talented, amazing personalities, amazing people, and they’re work is not going to be crushed by someone who’s only seen 1 video of theres. Now, if you want the REAL JYJ/DBSK, go search up ‘Empty’ by JYJ, ‘Hug’ by DBSK, ‘Mirotic’ by DBSK or ‘Why did I fall in Love with You?’ by Tohoshinki. (DBSK) THE END.

  8. i respect your opinion on this Ayy Girl music video. I quite agree with the kanye west part you commented.WTF Video horrible you think? aint JYJ fault they did their best and work hard in dancing, but the digitalize background no comments. Obviously you’ll expect more furious comments flooding as you know TVXQ guinness world record fanbase.Good luck with them. Fans, i know you’re piss off. Feel like killing this guy. But i’ll beg you all to chill. Don’t go *fcking* while commenting please. We cassies ain’t that cheap. we don’t go spamming *fcking* comments. You wanna change the situation. Show your cassies power, proof to this guy! Relax, give a slight anger comment but be professional. I rather you spam him with better stuffs proofing JYJ’s talent ya know. Im hoping for a reply from smoking jacket. We cassies will stand together protecting our love ones. AKTF <3

  9. LoL…I was going to say “LET THE RED OCEAN RISE” but obviously that’s not necessary…xD Let’s be brutally honest here: JYJ’s mv really wasn’t all that great, and the song isn’t going to be one of the greatest hits of all time. I can admit that because I know they’re truly artists and not just a boyband, and I’m a fan that wants them to improve. So Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu oppas, please don’t do something like this in the future. Apparently this was a mistake, so learn from it. I want you to succeed, and I know you want to change/shake up the industry, but I’m sorry to say that to do that you’ll have to break in with a mainstream song before you break the mold. I’ll support you no matter what. Cassiopeiam JYJ, and DBSK hwaiting!

  10. you and your site is WHAT THE FUCK itself! JYJ is the the meaning of success, talented and awesome. blame the production if the MV is worst according to your ‘whatever opinion so-called’, but their talents are very well known and that’s not a joke. don’t underestimate JYJ or TVXQ or their fanbase power because we are simply the best just like that and we are the best teamwork ever!
