The only thing that would make it autistic is that you say that out loud in real life without anyone asking. Even if someone asks, just say linux. Only say gentoo if they pry more, if you follow that principle of keeping your hobbies to yourself then you are not autistic.

what are you solving by doing that? if the answer is nothing, then yes. also, if you are running gentoo on a laptop and don't have a build server or at least a desktop with a threadripper then chances of autism are also high

I might have another crack at Gentoo this summer. I installed it a couple years ago on my laptop and learnt how it all works, but I don't use my laptop much so I forgot everything again and just went back to Arch. saved all my configs and shit though.
need to figure out how to build packages on my desktop this time.

I use Gentoo with full disk encryption (keyfile + double password) on my t440p laptop and it's pretty comfy.
And yes, encrypting your drives is autistic if you have no actual reason to do ut.

Yea as the other anon said, gentoo wiki has everything covered. The wiki's excellent.
But my recommended method is using efistub kernel for your boot, with a custom initramfs built-in to that kernel.
            https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Custom_Initramfs
It's a lot simpler to set up than it sounds. Compiling cryptsetup staticly can give you trouble tho, but you can solve it always.

But, Grub will only give you headaches. Remove it, efistub is simpler thus superior. Grub is a constant source of Unscheduled Tinkering™. To have a long marriage with a tinker-distro like Gentoo, you must tinker everything to require no tinkering ever again.
But if you insist on grub, check LUKS2 compatibility, at least 5 years ago GRUB only worked with LUKS1.

The fact you know what that means makes you irreparably autistic

The funny thing is that while "full disk encryption" was once a weird advanced topic associated with linux autists, the situation now is completely different.
On Windows and macOS, it's now utterly trivial to set up (it's practically the default for macs iirc). You can pretty much just go to settings and turn it on.
On Linux it seems to be a massive fricking pain in the ass by comparison. For example, you have to set it up during installation- no way to do it in-place later.

    FDE is silly.
The superior autism is instead to run the entire OS from RAM (booted from a vanilla live image) and load encrypted overlay files for your customizations and personal data. Alpine linux supports this, though Puppy linux does a better job of implementing it.
