I actually gave walking sims a chance when they first started comming out, but they ALL had collision bugs. Their 1 mechanic was buggy, every time that happened I quit the game and never touched it again. I don't think I've ever beat a walking sim.

            >walking sims
Literally the worse thing ever. Its the perfect hipster game for people who are too lazy to think of mechanics or implement them.
            >but muh atmosphere
If you want atmosphere just watch a movie. You don't have to constantly engage with it for the plot to move forward and you don't have to deal with the annoying tedium of waiting forever to get somewhere.
            >muh story
The story always sucks in those game. Its just people being depressed and pseudo intellectual or spiritual. I don't want to walk around finding fricking audio logs about cool shit that happened. That or dealing with some random NPC's banal problems that exist because they are too lazy to walk over and get something themselves. The ones that implement puzzles are better, but then comes the question of why not just make a puzzle game and cut the walking sim part out. It would make the experience more fun and make for less work.

            Anonymous

I think the walk system is actually kind of neat, but it's also kind of pointless outside of a walking sim. the moment a player can jump or fall, the whole 'reversibility' thing he's going for breaks and all your guarantees are gone. I guess that also explains why I couldn't 'fall' off the modest pile of rocks near the dam / desert area which I always found kind of annoying

I remember in another video he was complaining about how much he pays for Visual Studio and how bad VS is. This guy just can't handle money and pays for shit when there are perfectly good free alternatives

When did he say he pays for SDKs? The one he shown is free and part of Windows. The 20 million mostly went to paying programmers, artists and other staff. I'm sure his Visual Studio costs are a drop in the bucket.

            >Blow started out on Linux
            Didn't know that.

But also I suspect he's fallen victim to corporate Linux all the same. Honestly, if I never moved beyond the gnu/systemd abstraction hellscape, I'd probably have never gone native too. You get so caught up in using those abstractions, all you can see is the fractured landscape they live in. But it was a real eye opening moment I had when I really learned all the ins and outs of "vanilla Linux" and the bare minimum to take it to a usable system, and I realized I didn't have to worry about much of anything at all. At most, the only troublesome part of the ecosystem is the sound server, but with FMOD as middleware, I don't need to give a frick about that either. I'm not even sure working with raw sound on Windows is any better than pulse/pipewire/oss4 to begin with.

Meanwhile, working with the perf API is a billion times better than profiling on Windows. This is true across the board. Memmap vs Virtualalloc, filesystem operations, etc. To say nothing of how much more convenient the dev workflow is on a Unix system. And holy fricking shit. A scriptable debugger, you can't beat that. Windows *still* doesn't have a scriptable debugger as far as I know. I only support Windows at this point out of financial necessity. If I can avoid doing any kind of dev work on the system itself, then I'm a happy camper.

"individually consume years of your life" It already did, technically. The damage is mostly done to his life. But theres a chance the community at large will benefit when he releases. Most people that got access to the beta claim that the thing is very sweet. There might be bias because they are bound to be either fans, or people that specifically want what he wants.

I'm a little bit skeptical about many things he said and showed in his stream, but I think it could be mostly good.

Isn't it still a technical reason if nobody can read your code without years of training.
It doesn't take more than a few weeks to learn a new language (even less for a dialect of scheme, most people already know it from school too), the problem is the stack was convoluted, BECAUSE it was based on scheme. Even if everyone knew lisp it would still takes many more months to get used to a lisp codebase than a c codebase, simply because any given implementation of a algorithm is 10x the work to read/write in lisp.

Reason was that Sony wanted all their first party dev studios to use C++ so they could easily exchange code/engines. This was decided during the PS3 era, but even so ND still used Racket for most of TLOU and left C++ for implementing the core engine.

    Do you meet the criteria?

    >We are getting a *lot* of requests to get into the beta, and it's a lot more than the number of people we currently plan to add. I think a lot of the time this comes from people on forum threads giving others the contact address, so I am posting this information to be propagated in those places.

    >I appreciate that so many people are interested in using the compiler, but if we keep getting flooded with requests, we'll have to stop reading the request emails in a timely manner, or else change the email address to something new and unknown.

    >Most of the people we add to the beta meet these criteria:

    >* Have deep programming experience in their field
    >* Look like they will actually use the compiler for nontrivial programs for a significant amount of time

    >If you do not meet these criteria, please don't spam us. We appreciate you but we have a limited bandwidth for communicating with testers, so we are looking for people who will reach into relatively deep parts of the functionality. It's fine, you'll get the compiler once we work out a few more waves of bugs and finish the final bits of functionality for 1.0.

    >If you do meet the above criteria, go ahead and get in touch with us as before.

    >Sincerely, we appreciate all the attention, but it's just too much sometimes.

But isn't this like template in C++?
      sum :: (a: $T, b: T) -> T {
      return a + b;
      }

      > When sum() is called, the type is determined by the T which is preceded by the $ symbol. In this case, $ precedes the a variable, and so the type T is determined by the first parameter. So, the first call to sum() is float + float, and the second call is int + int. In the third call, since the first parameter is float, both parameters and the return value become float. The second parameter is converted from int to float, and the variable x is deduced to be float as well.

Templates are C++ preprocessor magic where the preprocessor literally generates C++ source code at compile time.

This looks more like type-inference built in to the runtime.

I don't know much about haskell but I'm kinda curious about this.
Why would it translate into a record lookup at run-time? wouldn't it just need to record lookup at compile time? My (vague) notion is that the compiler will do something like "when sum x y gets called, check if x and y have the same type and this type is Num", which should be doable at compile time right?

He started off as a nepo hire doing QA and then left because he couldn't handle the job responsibilities. He recognized that. He then went on to study offensive security and after having gotten several badges from Defcon (which is huge, btw, he clearly kjnows what he's doing), he went back to blizzard to work in security. Then he left because he was underpaid and treated like shit, going to Amazon game studios. At some point he was offered a job to go and hack powerplants for the federal government.

He's not a good programmer, he never said he was. That's why he points to undertale as to why he can develop games. The code for undertale is a disaster, but it's still hugely successful, you don't need to be a good programmer to make a game.

Blow is hilarious. If he was a bit more of any of the following: humble/likable/funny/entertaining, just on stream, he would probably have 100x the viewers and would actually be able to fund whatever the frick he is doing and build momentum around his memelang. Instead he has resting b***h voice and sound like he is constantly seething, coping and complaining all at once.

j_blow could have been doing BS like this for 10 years. He chose not to and after his new game flops he will never make another one. I hope he works hard and succeed (with whatever the frick he is trying to do), but realistically he won't make any money

When doing any kind of game design, the first thing that happens is the designer confuses fun and good, after learning the difference, in pursuit of goodness they forget to make the game fun. This has been the case for all of blows games.

He used to stream himself working all the time, I watched him back then, but then his channel blew up. Now he dumbs down a lot of his content because nobody would understand wtf he was on about if he actually went deep into offensive security talks. He also hangs out on Discord after stream, he memes a lot.

Who the frick is pjmlp and why does he do nothing but spread fud and mis/disinformation about c in every hacker news thread with ' [cC] ' in the title? Is it a Chinese bot? Why hasn't it been banned? I can't imagine a real person who consistently turns non-problems into deal breakers and large real problems into minor nitpicks as often as this bot.

He once got a new keyboard and couldn't even bother reading the manual for 5 seconds to check what is the key combo to turn off the RGB lighting. He then tried to install the software (and failed) and after like 10 minutes, he gave up and threw the keyboard away. Then started rumbling about

Age-related brain rot. Once you get past 40, you'll see it start to take your friends. And that's the sign it's starting on you as well. You just don't realise it yet
He posted a rant on twitter a while ago, after seeing a game pop up an error message in its front end. From memory it was clear from the error message that game was expecting some ascii text payload from its backend endpoint but had instead received some HTML from the load balancer and dutifully popped up a dialog with that instead
        >this game is using html for multiplayer
        >even though it's impossible to use html for multiplayer
        >because html isn't even programming

wrt Blow's woes, it's funny to me that he isn't aware that windows doesn't have all the right codecs by default, asnd that';s been the case before webp.

Blow is right on that one. Why should the endpoint ever return HTML? Hell why would it even be using http? When doing net code you should be working at a lower level than that.

            Anonymous

It's in the front end, so it doesn't really matter, and TCP does what you want for updating stuff like player presence or progress or whatever. The developers messed up by not catering for HTML responses (from, e.g., load balancer, proxy or other intermediary) - I'm sure the intended endpoint never returns HTML. This is all obvious, 95+% of games with any server component for the metagame will work this way, and you'd need more evidence if you wanted to infer anything about the in-game networking from this
Anyway, the point is not that there was a front end bug in this specific game, and instead that Blow felt the need to opine despite his comment revealing that he had no real experience from which to form these opinions
            >95% of games? so there's a 5% chance you're wrong
Sure, I just bet according to the odds

I don't understand why he spends 20 mil and develops all this great code and tech for... fricking boring puzzle games. I can appreciate good low-level code, I have a career in it and have worked in several application spaces. So I get him from that angle. His games are technically interesting but not fun. Why the frick would you spend 20 mil on sokoban?

For his puzzle games. He is dedicated to his craft, and seems to be focused.

Why all the hate on him? Threads defecating on him have been up for a week now. Is it because his smallboi hobby language can do games, and certain other smallboi hobby languages cannot? That ain't his fault.

        >why hate on him
His ego is greater than his actual achievements warrant. Johnathan Blow is just the douche bag know it all, that managed to get famous. He made an indie game when indie games were new and managed to get famous from a documentary and then used that fame to sell a mediocre game. Then he turned around and acted like he was the God of programming.
        >Everyone is doing everything wrong and I am the only one who knows what he is doing.
        >if something is done slightly different from how I would do it, it is wrong
I'll put it this way Tobby Fox has achieved the same amount or more success than him with undertale and deltarune. Now would you take any programming advice from him?

Undertale was made in fricking game maker studio, a game engine designed for absolute morons who don’t understanding anything about programming, and on top of that it looks like something that could have been made in 1981 for the first ibm-pc running on an 8086 cpu. There’s nothing even remotely technically interesting about that game or anything toby fox has done.

The Witness is the least caring of my time as a game player while at the same time it claims to care about not wasting your time.
The moral of the story is that Blow has entered a self referential dance where he's attempting to blatantly lie and see if anyone calls him on it, and thusly you should take all claims with a grain of salt because maybe he's just an butthole who hates dealing with normies because his spotlight blinds people to the potential of being trolled.

Unlike Casey Muratori and the Pirate Software guy, Jon Blow actually shipped 2 games.
Not only did he ship, the games were commercially and artistically successful.
He's got an inflated sense of self-worth but so do the other guys in his space, except he's the only one that gets any kind of results.
