GTK is a widget library. It's used to basically draw and control a programm's GUI on the screen.

GTK is a widget library which makes your program run sluggish and reacts terribly slow. It also eats up a lot of RAM.

Cinnamon looks cool but it's really resource-hungry, I regret installing it... I have read that uninstalling and installing another DE without doing a fresh install has a good chance of fricking things up too, and a fresh install would be such a hassle at this point since I've moved so much crap in it already...

Imagine wanting to use a 12-year-old fork of GNOME. Just use Ubuntu and enjoy that sweet triple buffering.

    I don't like cinnamon
but more importantly the guy behind Linux Mint is an anti-semite so I'll never run it on any of my machines.

For LMDE, this is what you'd need to follow:
      https://wiki.debian.org/NVIDIA%20Optimus
There's probably some guide for Ubuntu that would be your base for troubleshooting it in regular Mint.

It took some time to get LMDE working like Windows 10 on my laptop (worked OOTB on my desktop

      homosexual.

). It's a PITA, but spending a day or two to get that to run is worth it, now I never have to use Windows again!
Alone the time saved by not having Windows updates would pay itself off in about a year latest, and I hope to still be using computers for decades.
