They will add ads in the videos themselves, so you'll see them even on other players, like on Twitch.
Downloading using yt-dlp+cookies for YT Premium subscribers, then torrenting, seems like the best work around.

free VPNs are insecure. other options throttle your speed

Skill issue. You can easily sandbox and connect to multiple proxy endpoints to up you bandwidth. And there are still free, activist run, genuinely trustworthy VPNs out there. You just need an IQ above room temperature to figure out how to get access to them.

Or you could become useful enough to society to join a private tracker and just not worry about all this. But I expect too much

living in a fifth world country makes it better because either the government doesn't care about your data or the government is so ineffective it would take years to know where your data even is in their databank

Can you just yt-dlp shit from Netflix? They can always do the same thing that content streaming sites do.

Adding actual DRM to regular yt videos is not very likely, but in this case you should be able to rip it on 720p with hdmi splitter that supports HDCP.

      a shit on the product
you pay to remove their shit from the product
Off-topic but it's actually exactly the business model of most mobile apps nowadays. Since they can't anymore make more than a cent per year with the scam that ad services are, they use ads only to try to convince the user to pay to get rid of ads. Believe it or not.

Frick them. It's the principle of the thing. I would literally rather watch absolutely nothing in complete darkness than watch an ad. I don't care what I still have to do. Frick them every step of the way.

it would be so based to make something like that
make a daemon and a wrapper (pre download, post download hook) for yt-dlp
    prehook:
if the video is found on a tracker try to leech
if no seeders or leeching speed below a certain value or reached a timeout to connect to peers then
    download from youtube

    posthook:
if the video is not found on a tracker
post a new torrent on a tracker automatically

    configuration:
    - torrent tracker list - trackers in order of preference (configurable to be futureproof)
    - timeout in seconds
    - min leech speed
    - max seed speed
    - videos path - where to download videos
    - yt-dlp options?
    - torrent client? - for the daemon to know how to start the client with the service
    - torrent command? - for the user to provide the command to add a torrent
    daemon
    loop
if the torrent client doesn't run restart it
    handle hooks

pass to yt-dlp some sane options like best quality, download subtitles, download metadata
I don't know if it should be configurable, because it would proliferate the tracker with many versions of the same video unnecessarily
I would rather choose to configure e.g. rtorrent and make a daemon manage it so it is a system service and always runs when the service runs and it should rather have it's own user so the user can use their own torrent client instance for other things than this tool and not worry about having these torrents there and prevent user from killing it

daemon would manage torrents automatically with preconfigured rtorrent client or making it up torrent configuration up to the user to in configuration as well (user provides a command to add torrent in their client)
there is no problem with server needing a lot of disk space because it's peer to peer - it's literally flawless - faster downloads, same interface, transparent for youtube (a plus maybe so they have less traffic and less burden on them)
