They don't. They have access to shitty locked tech, made to be intentionally hard to modify or control. You can't see your directory structure or open an arbitrary file with an arbitrary app on a smartphone.

Milenials and X-ers know about computers because we grew up in the small golden age were the abstraction level was:

      a) high enough that any newbie can start using computers
      b) open/low/good enough that you were allowed to tinker and learn about the internals if you wanted too (aka. git gud).

Now they make it a point to design technology against power users. It's over.

Yeah they've streamlined it so much that technology might as well be magic to newer generations. Just a magic scry mirror slowly stealing your soul for some monolithic globo-homosexual corporation to sell. I actually am thankful for the amount of normie friendly tech youtubers who talk about more complex stuff and introduce it to normies because they're like the last line of defense from things getting totally unusably bad

you can buy a capable small computer (raspberry pi or equivalent) very cheaply that is great for learning the ins and outs of any computer. I would've killed for something like that when I was a kid with me speccy. there really aren't any excuses and there are plenty of zoomies that are into this stuff. it's never been easier or cheaper to be a hobby technologist.

Eh, the Mac and iPod didn't do nearly a fraction as much damage to humanity as the iPhone did. I'd argue the iPod was based because it fricked over the music industry by popularizing illegal MP3s along with Napster. The iPhone on the other hand gave every moron a global surveillance CCTV skinner box in their pocket and ruined the Internet worse than September 1993

            >DRM cancer
In contrast literally every MP3 player was superior to this shit.

            >the Mac
            Meh depends.
You can still argue in the 1980s there was no infrastructure (internet) or enough technological advancement to push apple slavery.

because it fricked over the music industry
That would be mix tapes and audio castes in the 80s

The self burned audio CDs in the 90-early2000s.

And literally every MP3 player in the 2000s and after.

Daily reminder that this device was better to have in ~2007 then any iPod.

See that shit all the time on IQfy. Zoom zooms claiming they have to have Uber or Grubhub deliver them expensive food daily because "boomers never taught us anything" when they have access to YouTube. No need for fancy classes or even for guidance from parents. Basic cooking can easily be learned online. Same for basic car maintenance. Sure, more advanced topics can benefit from having someone there to guide you first hand, but how to make a simple casserole from bagged ingredients available at any grocery store can be learned in a few minutes. They just don't want to know.

I have zero patience for people like this. They exist in all generations. The classic boomer meme was not knowing how to operate a VCR.

My wife and I saw our neighbour shoveling snow last week. I asked her why she was shoveling a 2-car driveway when she owns a snowblower. She said her husband is away and she doesn't know how to start the "pull-to-start" snowblower.

My wife was like "maybe you should help her start it"? Frick no. Clearly a case of not wanting to know. When her husband comes home I'm certain she whined "wah wah I had to shovel so much while you were gone."

It does, '96 is the cutoff technically.
I think you're actually fine until about 98 99 when you are unlikely to recognise the dialup sound, have watched a tape film, or experienced the internet pre-social media uprising / pre smartphone

A lot of young people are genuinely lazy and/or moronic. And they spent the better part of 3 years straight doing nothing but dicking around on their phones consuming YT shorts/tiktok slop 24/7, all made worse by the fact that the family unit at large is basically dead or at best in the ER by now. I won’t entirely shit on them because they stood absolutely no chance with the way the world is now and odds are their families utterly failed them, but at the same time that doesn’t make them any less dumb. And with gen alpha, that shit is going to be scary when they actually grow up. I unironically think we’ll start seeing 70’s/80’s level serial killers again with them.
      t. 24

IMO older and younger zoomers are two very different things. I grew up watching VHS tapes and renting movies at a Hollywood Video a few miles up the road from me for example, and the golden rule for computers was “never share a goddamn thing about you and stay private.”

Because millennials are some of the worst, most incompetent parents in history, raising iPad kids from hell, and it's funny seeing you childless 30+ year olds complain about people barely younger than you, that probably could've co-existed in the same goddamn high school even. Zoomers aren't blameless but their shitty parents didn't help either.

You don't understand how fundamentally different zoomers are. Usually you can relate to someone 5 years apart from your birth year going both ways, but zoomers buck that trend. That's why Millennials are so confused about them. Someone born in 94 has much much MUCH more in common with born in 84, 74, hell even fricking 1894 than someone born in 1999

Again, treating zoomers as a monolithic group is moronic when there were so many pivotal events that happened between 1997 and now. I graduated high school right before Trump won, and I could not have been fricking luckier, as that's when my district started integrating smartphone shit in the classroom in earnest. Probably on purpose to put them on the social media treadmill ASAP and get fed agitprop daily instead of enjoying real life and being able to forge real-life relationships. Even in college, you cannot get away with having even a decent feature phone, because most of the institutions force you to download a bunch of bullshit Android and iOS apps for taking tests and uploading your paperwork from the shitty built-in camera.

Again, blame shitty millennial parenting. The farther away you get from those parents being boomers, the less child is gonna relate to their older peers. Zoomers born after 9/11 are especially fricked in the head because their early millennial parents mentally clocked out in 2007 once the recession hit and the iPhone was released. Former teacher here.

Gen Z is moronic. It is extraordinary. Others teachers I talked to who have worked since the 80s have confirmed something is fricking weird with them. They cannot do shit.

Memory and attention span like a fricking sieve. They cannot focus.
Profound lack of general knowledge. In the past when we came to teach WW2 pretty much everyone in the class would have heard of WW2 and know a bit about it before. With Gen Z, tonnes of them have never heard of it. It is fricking mental. Never heard of Elvis. Never heard of the Beatles. Never hear of Michael Jackson.
Many of them consume literally no culture except video games and TikTok. Many do not watch TV shows let alone read fricking books or online articles. They just watch YouTube short vids and TikTok. They know nothing about the world.
Do not even listen to music that much except TikTok songs.

Yes low tech literacy is insane. They do not know how to Google shit. Set a bunch of 15 year olds a history research task and their idea for how to do research online was to ask people on social media. Seriously. Fricking hell.
They had never heard of Wikipedia or some shit like that.
They only ever use like 3 or 4 websites through apps. YouTube, TikTok and maybe Twitter.

Not even going into the behaviour issues, literal temper tantrums with feet stomping and crying from actual 15/16 year olds acting like 7 year olds.

I am 30 years old and I forgot everything that was useless to me by now. Learning history by heart and all the dates was fricking dumb. Especially when it wasn't anything interesting. On the other hand all the things that actually matter in live like socialization and making connections was just left alone. Anon, I think Twitter is an eXception, twitter is pretty much boomer X/Y-core except the young autists who are against Tiktok/Shorts/YT"influencers"
you should include Meta instead on the list since both old boomers and Gen Z still use FB for their local facebook "Reels" influencer who also use Instagram (or "Threads" lol).

Twitter is by far the most well-adjusted, it's like a modern balance between the good side of reddit and IQfy and most users are "X" as in Gen X, Twitter now known as X (for Gen X).
There's a lot of circles in there like you could find the average animeme poster and pepeposter, conspiracy theorists, giga autists/artists, right winger and extremist chads, and even fricking crossdressing traps (literally every facet of what makes up an imageboard) not to mention all the anime shit in there making it even bigger than an imageboard and all of gelbooru/furryshit combined.

People roasted you for the boomer references but I feel like its more like just caring. about history. It doesn't have to be "to be human you have to listen to Thriller" but maybe just know who MJ is? I have no idea why but as Gen X we just gobbled up everything, what is Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Traveling Wilburys, classical music jazz. What happened in World War 1 and ya just you know what I mean. This has to be a later Gen Z thing, probably those who were born during the 2000s.
Pre-2000s Gen Z watched VHS tapes, had their parents cassettes, and largely used the internet for shit like 'cool maths games', miniclip and newgrounds and Wikipedia growing up.

Also everybody at my school was sad when Michael Jackson and later, David Bowie died.

Also I might add that even if they do remember VHS vaguely it doesn't matter because they were so young. You can't compare a 9 years old watching his favourite movie on VHS in 2002 with a zoomie watching Barney on tape when he was 2 and still pooping themselves.

At 2012 newgrounds started going downhill also less relevant.

in 2010 someone born in 97 was 13 years old. Almost old enough to lick newgrounds a little.

            >someone born in 97

            >VHS
No real VHS after 2010. Most people have DVD at this point.
Be 13 and see VHS from parents. More like a obscure thing from their childhood at this point..

This can depend on the situation and especially country, I can see someone who is born in 2020 only growing up with tapes and no phones because his father hates modern tech etc. However that is like 1 in a billion chance of this happening.
I can see that only ~10% of zooners grow up on tape especially if they grow up in a 2world country and their parents are poor. Not that common. Zoomers are moronic.

Raised by GenX. The same generation that is proud about being latch key kids and how much they don't care, it translates into the parenting style. Zoomers got the smartphone / tablet in their formative teen years from their GenX parents, who were more interested in their meme jobs than spending time with their children. The end result is a generation that never learned anything valuable, be it computer skills, how to talk to the opposite sex, etc. They use "apps" for absolutely everything, including finding a mate. I've seen Zoomers get into a state of genuine panic whenever they realise they've misplaced their phone. Smartphones are like ketracel white for GenZ.

What is good about boomers is that they are at least aware there are scammers out there. I may think that my father is pretty backwards for refusing to have banking stuff on his phone or only using PC banking from his own PC where he has «a good antivirus on it», but that’s 10000 times better than zoom zooms mindlessly clicking on links.

  27. 4 weeks ago

My theory is that millennials were exposed to a "broader" range and variety of the internet, they are better prepared to detect shady stuff because of this wider experience and being exposed to non-mainstream sites. They lived through the biggest growth of the online world so its history is a little bit ingrained in them. Zoomers on the other hand go mobile first and are thrown into the same curated apps. They never leave, that's what they do. They lack that natural suspicion.

This but I attribute stuff more to censorship culture developed within zoomer culture. I think the kinds born late 90s and into 2000s saw more of the helicopter parenting and their time spent online with lot of sources made them felt scared of opposing views to the point that they adopted a antagonistic relations rather than welcome opposing ideas. Millenials had to live with it with more free speech in mind. Millennials fought through the decades of censorship. So did the Gen X (post cold war) and Boomer generation (hippie).

Boomers fall for something once. Boomers can be told once to look out for scammers and they become skeptical.

Zoomers trust others and tech to look out for them or get dismissive and are in denial that someone or something might harm them.

I feel like the kind of technology zoomers are exposed to vs what millennials were exposed to plays a big role
Millennials, if their shit broke, had to figure out how to fix it. The systems and programs they used required some basic knowledge to know how to use it and you were always able to go deeper
Less distractions and more versatility with the technology encouraged curiosity as to how it all worked

Speaking as a fairly tech literate zoomer. Most zoomers, (seemingly most people in general) only see technology as a means to an end, be it entertainment, fame, communication, business. Most apps on mobile or in web browsers, which many zoomers grew up using, are made to be as moron proof as possible while being good enough to do whatever it is needs doing, and the most advanced thing most people need on a computer is Microsoft Office or Google Office. Much of my generation didn't learn how to torrent or find good DDL warez sites because they had Netflix, Spotify, etc. They didn't learn what LAN is because most play online and have good internet. Most use Discord because their friends use it and Discord is easy to use with a lot of features (privacy sadly not being one of those features.) Zoomers that either have to learn computers to overcome parental and/or financial limitations or just take a genuine interest in them can make me and a lot of this board look outright illiterate, but they are not the norm.

I was talking to a zoomer cousin of mine complaining about not being able to find shows he liked, or the shows moving to another streaming service and now he has to pay for it. When I talked about torrenting he looked at me dumbfounded, even a bit offended. It was a weird experience, it is as if he realized he was incompetent. Then I found out he doesn't have a pc at all, his father has it but not him, he doesn't use it, but then again why should he, he plays video games on console and just watches shit on twitch.
15 years ago I was shit scared about how corporations would force governments to crack down on piracy, on p2p sharing ,torrenting etc. I was extremely naive. They just made people get used to a very bad (maybe "closed/limited" is a better word) environment that is the smart phone. Hence you get the famous "zoomer cs major doesn't know about file system" meme

This is a serious take, but that thing apply to anyone. The market dumb down every aspect of people's possibilities to the point you have to be an outlaw to get something out of the few possibilities the actual tech gives us.
New cars are the perfect example of what people are and want deeply, a service for driving and every aspect of it is done by the manufacturer. Nobody own anything anymore, or have the right to have alternatives but going full hobo in a river of servitude. If anyone think schwab and a great reset isn't possible or far fetch, well we're deeply in it already on a micro level, and a very few literrate can read that and learn to give up on most things before it's too late. If that makes sense.

      >Why would familiarity with tech protect against falling for online scams?
      >Did familiarity with telephones protect against falling for call scams? Of course not.

There is always going to be a % of population in any era, in any generation, who will be utterly hopeless and utterly gullible. They will fall for scams, guaranteed.

Now to answer your question, people growing up in the 90s and entering into the information age were quite conscious of the concept of anonymity. Early adopters of the internet were mostly nerds. Social morons, but typically on the smarter end of the IQ bell curve. The very least, they were smart enough to deem the idea of publicly revealing their identity, or surrendering sensitive information to unknown parties completely abhorrent. And they used tech to protect themselves, and if something broke or was compromised, they rolled up their sleeves and fixed problems on their own. Pessimism, not trusting anything, nor anyone online was the norm.

Fast forward a decade and a half, suddenly you had the Zuckerbergs entering the IT scene and created platforms that actively discouraged people from protecting their identity. It opened the gates to normies, who had zero clue how the internet worked and just flooded their profiles with their entire lives for the world to see. Zoomers grew up in this environment and don't know any better and formed implicit trust in these services. This also made them more gullible and more sensitive to suggestion.

      That's why.

They don't know how to pirate. They don't know how to change settings. They don't understand password managers. This paired with their ability to interface with algo's makes it a significantly worse problem than boomers who simply can't bother to learn. Zoomers, truly, do not have the capacity to learn. Ancient early millenial late gen-x here, I used BBS's before I used the Internet and when I used the internet I never ever used my real name. The advice was to never use your real name on the internet because of all the wackjobs on there and because there was nothing to gain from it. Also only a fool would take anything written on the internet at face value. I'd been using the internet for ten years at least before I ever typed my real name on it, and I still provide the most basic of information, or fake info where possible.

Also I hate paying for things on the internet. It's not that I can't afford it, it's just that it's unnecessary.

Technology and pop culture is moving along so fricking quickly these days that the idea of the traditional ~15 year "generation" doesn't really work anymore.

What I find worrying yet fascinating is now that zoomers are starting to have children. This generation will be absolutely terrible.

Like I'm almost 40. I grew up without the internet and without social media. First time I touched a computer, I was 11 and it took another 2 years before I went on the internet. I have two kids around 10 years old and I'm raising them with this in mind, that you can grow up without a smartphone and while doing something else than watching minecraft streamers reaction videos.

Now I'm not saying all people my age raise their children like I do, but I have this option because I knew the world before the smartphone era.

The problem with zoomers is that they don't have this option in raising their children. Themselves grew up with a smartphone in their hands and on social media. They can't tell their kids "well son when I was your age, I'd go to the public library if I suddenly got interested in the Mayas" or "well son when I was your age, I had to ask my friends the exact directions to their houses because all we had was a paper map". Zoomers never knew that.

Most of this is true and I see it in my friends and in my self, but I don't know how to be better or "escape".

Shitting on zoomers is funny and all but if we're being honest they're just like any other generation before them only they grew up in a different world that doesn't encourage tinkering or online privacy.
The zoomers that were interested in tech still got into tech at various levels, the ones that weren't interested could just circumvent learning about it entirely and go with a phone (which wasn't an option for previous generations, hence the dumbing down of that group of zoomers).
They do have some weird stuff stemming from online culture, like posting deranged hyper aggressive shit towards women or acting like any type of sexual posting is unacceptable (some b***h will literally flaunt her vegana online on twitch and zoomers will act like you killed someone if you comment on it) but I'm sure every generation had weird shit previous ones couldn't understand.

Remember IQfy. Zoomers aren't people and needed to be mocked off of this board, and life. Whenever an anon admits to being born between 1997-2012, call them worse than cattle and report the post. Gen alpha posters are better than zoomers, even if they are underage bans.

Please report any zoomer that admits to being a zoomer. You will be doing Gods service.

I'm not religious. I like to think of it as a service to humanity.

I adovcate killing zoomers by the way. It's like killing rats, only rats have more of a soul. If you know someone born after 96 but before 2013, God wants you to kill them! Reprobates.

Millennials didn't raise Gen Z, Gen X did. Also 25 year olds should know better for frick sake. Every generation has had shitty parents, but only Gen Z end up worse.

Not the ones born 1997-2007. Aka the majority of the generation.

It means zoomer's parents (millenials) suck at teaching their kids.

      >It means zoomer's parents (millenials)
The parents of a given generation are typically two generations removed.
      Millennials were raised by Boomers.
Zoomers were raised by Gen X.

        >Zoomers were raised by Gen X.
        YES.
        >It means zoomer's parents (millenials)
It is incredible how hard the zoomers spit in impotent rage at millenials.
