Thoughts on this laptop? To me the price seems very good for what it is, especially considering I was waiting for G15 Rog Zephyrus 22 which is essentially the same price with inferior components. There's option to upgrade some components for more $ too. If it's worth it I'm willing to dish out extra money

I'm looking to use it for work(minimal intensity, can use a toaster for this) gaming and potentially VR in the future

I was looking to build a PC but my work demands a lot of moving around, so I wouldn't be able to use it for majority of the time...

I splurged about three fiddy on a t480 on a whim.
I feel like I betrayed my t440p but it's still a worthwhile upgrade right? I.. I didn't frick up right? The usb-c port isn't gonna shit the bed and disintegrate the second I lay my hands on it right?

      Anonymous

      >but it's still a worthwhile upgrade right?
not really, unless your t480 has mx150 gpu and you care about graphics performance. the quad-core cpus in t480 have worse performance than quad-core cpus in t440p out of the box, and probably after undervolting too. sure, it's thinner, lighter and the battery lasts longer, but do you really care about those things? i'd assume that you wanted a desktop replacement anyway if you bought a Thinkpad with p suffix.

        Anonymous

        >but do you really care about those things
I actually do which is one of the reasons why I thought it was a good idea. My t440p is igpu too. I'd buy a desktop if I wanted one.

This is just false for a T440p out of the box config

I got my t480 (surprisingly fast btw), and I have to say that everything except the obvious upgrades in performance feels just slightly worse. I hate that the charging is forced through this flimsy usb-c that quite frankly gets in the way of my ergonomic couch-station posture. It's like I can almost feel the tiny contacts and solder joints wear down as I watch it bend in its socket when I move around. It wouldn't be that bad if the charging port wasn't soldered to the fricking motherboard. Also the keyboard is mushy and I don't like it. The trackpoint buttons have no travel. I'm not a huge fan of this to be honest. I can feel my t440p judging me.

      >but holy shit the P1 keyboards are just fricking chicklet little shits with huge gaps between them
that has been the case since the xx30 series. the real season is that lenovo has been chipping away at key travel bit by bit to make their devices thinner, that's why it feels so shit. xx30 series chiclet keyboard has the same amount of key travel as the xx20 series classic keyboard. the one in xx40 series has slightly less, and modern thinkpads have even less.

Ethernet port on my X200 is not working. Linux detects hardware, but the interface is not showing anywhere. Port LED's are always on, except when powed off and not charging. Port on the dock doesn't change anything ether. Sometimes, (very rarelly, seems random) upon starting charging or powering up, LED's will stay off and ethernet can work, I connected to my router once today. I could try flashing original BIOS, but I don't think that's the problem.
Does this seem like hardware damage?

        Anonymous

prime render offload. i think it starts an xorg instance running on the egpu and streams output from it to the laptop display? it's the default behavior on linux, or at least on debian which i use. the egpu works just like the internal discrete gpu. add __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia before a program launch command to make it use the nvidia gpu. didn't even have to configure anything beyond installing the proprietary nvidia driver.

neat, thanks. I haven't figured out how to install nvidia drivers on linux because I'm too moronic. I think this will work for playing vidya. However I am complicating things for myself because I am using manjaro, if installing the drivers on another distro is easier, please do say so.

the riser is exp gdc connected through the expresscard slot. the graphics card is a gtx 1050 ti by asus. no video outputs on the graphics card are connected. my os is debian gnu/linux and i'm using the proprietary nvidia drivers. video is rendered on the 1050 ti and then sent to the internal display through prime render offload. i can choose which programs use which gpu by putting special environment variables before program launch commands.

Why are bigger laptops with a centered mousepad (meaning no numpad) so unpopular? They just look so much better and personally I don't need the numpad. I feel like many manufacturers are missing out by not releasing one from time to time. Huawei seems to be one of the few in the west that does this while also not charging you a huge amount of money for them.

      Anonymous

I think they’re fantastic honestly, and when it comes to business-style laptops, if people are using them in an office, they can just dock them and use a keyboard. For portability and comfort, that design is my favourite.

not really, your hands are still off-center when using the trackpoint or typing. it really doesn't matter which input device you use.

      Anonymous

      >Why so unpopular?
      they're my favorite...
i guess many people look at their keyboard when they type and having a numpad is faster for those types
therefore the keyboard with the numpad would sell more units? don't even know unless we got the sales numbers of several brands such as HP, Lenovo, Dell and the types of keyboards.
The Apple keyboards don't have numpads right?

        Anonymous

Numpad is faster for putting in numbers, especially without having to look at the kb imho. It's literally the trackpoint of numerical input devices. You can just rest your hand on it while having everything that an accountant would need on your fingertips. No need to hunt and peck around the keyboard.
Its usefulness for normal people is debatable but I tend to lean towards more buttons=good if there is room for them.

Not really, but somehow I figured it out
I have no idea how I did it but after messing around with the RAM and the CMOS battery it finally turned on, asking for BIOS stuff because I had unplugged the battery
I convinced my mom to let me back up her stuff after that happened since she mainly uses it for work and losing all of that data would cost her a lot

Get a T440p or something, no idea how much they go for in your country. Or T420 if you like the older ones, but the screen sucks unless you mod it tbh

Why don't you tell us yourself? Some of them are good some of them are bad, or should I say, kinda useless. Good screens are everything. Do your research and tell US!
To put my money where my mouth it I'd like to research all keyboard key travel distances and "feel" of all thinkpads and I'll make an infographic for it for this gen.

Is 4 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD enough memory and storage for general use on Windows 10, or should I go for 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD instead? What about 8 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD? I'm conflicted on it because I don't know if paying an additional ~$50 is worth it or not.

      Anonymous

8 gb ram would be highly preferred. 4 is "usable" but get 8 if you possibly can.
as for storage 128 gb is fine if you have an external hard drive or a lot of cloud storage. 256 is comfy though.
If the difference is $50 though, go for it.

Yes, Thinkpads are very good. I'm actually writing this on a T450 at the moment, and can confirm it is very durable and has a great keyboard. I love it. I'm something of an open-source fanatic though, so I'm planning on also getting an X200, which I can use Coreboot / Libreboot with.

Will Lenovo make a 16" W530-form-factor computer? If so what name would it have? P530? I know they have the P1 but since it's lightweight and slim, it lost a lot of the W530's features. It only beats the W530 with its screen and weight.

Removing CMOS battery didn't do anything. I tried the little reset hole on the back of the laptop too. It just won't power on or anything.

I didn't think Windows Update installed BIOS updates, and the biggest change seemed to be a "Lenovo System" update. Regardless, the whole thing is bricked now. Gonna fiddle around with it some more to see if I can get it worked and undo the updates if possible.

Dell's keyboard is awful in comparison. Dell's trackpad is nice but I've already gotten used to the trackpoint so its kinda useless to me.

Of course, there are a few matters of preference with win 11 -- I miss the old taskbar. If you have win 10 now, you can roll back "within 10 days" as they say, but do it on day 9 if you don't like it, or some apps you need are not working right.

If its your first time with a thinkpad, its probably not gonna be a bad choice. IMO i like the P5x keyboard moar, but that wont justify the price/performance vs the T480. But its just how the P5x/7x systems are made, sort of like classic W500 and T6x machines. The frame is built pretty firm (no keyboard flex like on the W700)

but thats because I've used a shitload of thinkpads, and now i nitpick it all, and if its not one thing, its another.

            P50 felt better than the W550s, & T460p I had.
Maybe in between T430s & T420s but not as good as the latter.

The frame just felt really good, I think thats what it was, pretty sturdy & no fricking drop hinges or the entire bottom being removable as a cover.
There wasn't any flex much, felt like a sturdy to type on like a W500 and not like a W700 or cheap palmrest feeling like the W520/30.

I don't remember the FRU, my dad has it now, so i'll have to check back & review it.

            Anonymous

huh, so it's about the frame? i'm glad i bought a p51 then. i hope it's sturdy enough to last me through college.

            Ya frame feels good.
ive been thru hell with my W550s, i think you'll be fine in your bag. My T460p shit the bed one day and the screen stopped working. it was so weird, i think one of the boomers i live with, broke it. idk.
literally left it on sleep on my chair, come back blank screen.

pic related, it working on my T430s. It has a strange fade like if its a old CRT... my AFFS X31 has this problem & it seemed to come from just being in storage on a bookshelf? idk.

            >I cant stand my Precision 7730 because of its FHD display, I'll use my 3K panel on the W550s because of the higher PPI, (also frick the 1440p panel on the T470p). Get the later, you'll be editing on AC anyways, & you can always scale down under battery.
Hmh that would make 1700 for a new xps 15 9510.
Does NVIDIA Optimus run half decent under current linux or is it still shit so I'd have to deactivate the GPU when I don't use it?

i havent used linux in a long time, nor on modern hardware so I cant really say.
I would check dell forums before so.

Well I am going to use the T460 for some light programming and browsing on linux, I hope it will be able to handle it.

I would say so. Years back the X220 and X230 was recommended for programming, T460 is newer, more performance & will get the job done.
There was a fellow who was able to run GTAV off his X220 w/ an eGPU setup. ya the video card was overkill but... the dual core didn't slug it down either.

You may be able to snag a T470 with a 6th gen CPU (same as T460 offering), but itll have DDR4 RAM, which is faster but I think a bit more power hungry.

Ah damn... cant really help then, since im in the US, these machines are being thrown out faster than you can steal them.

if you're looking at other machines, I'm not familiar with later Dell machines, but I do know that the 7250 or 7260 have a leaky FHD touch screen that just leaks goopy shit like the X61 tablet SXGA+

Maybe a latitude 5560 or 5570 may suffice, I think the 5460 and 5470 can come in quadcore. However I don't know how different their build quality is since the E6440 died. i remember the E5430 being Thinkpad Edge tier......

No clue on any Elitebook, Zbook G3 15 was a bit underwelming but it's build was pretty nice. but idk if you'll find one cheap.

My battery still works and the swelling has not changed for about a few years. THe internal battery does not appear to have any issues. I assume the cycle count on the external battery is higher since it is the once that get discharged first.

been awhile since i needed a non-OEM battery, but I would just pay the $50 for an OEM-ish type you see on there. Like one with the lenovo logos and all. or $30+ for non-OEM as long as they have a clear warranty/return policy.

havent had a dud other than buying a NOS X1 carbon battery, which ended up having 70% depletion (fricking nothing for battery life vs something newer).

I'm not so sure. I paid 100 EUR for my W530. Granted, it was bought "as is" and turned out to be completely working and I also got 16GB of RAM that I didn't pay for, but still. Even assuming that the GPU is the stronger variant, the i7 is one of the quad-core models and the screen is 1080p with wide color gamut, I wouldn't really call that a bargain, just a good offer within the market price.

thats about 300 dollars in USD. If it works (can you test it) might be a good buy..

I'm in Portugal, this is from a chain of spanish pawn shops, from what my friends say it's pretty trustworthy. I feel like the advantage of the pawn shop is being able to trade in trash for what can become a big discount. I'll definitely look around for recent models and such but from what I know most Thinkpads here in Portugal are owned by companies and such and it's not very common to find good deals on used thinkpads online.

Also I forgot but the wide color gamut is defo a very attractive feature for me, I do some video editing/graphic design and it'd be nice to have a budget option if I need to do anything on the go.
Any other models with a good quality display?

If the RAM is not corrupted and it's 1080p, go for it. There's plenty things to make sure of in these laptops, you better run the usual checklist even if it's from a pawn shop. Things like BIOS password check, computrace check, chassis cracks and hinges check. It's not the best price but considering they have seemingly increased rather than gotten lower, it's an acceptable price. Just make sure you know what you're getting into. I was considering letting go of mine lately due to the summer heat.

Ah, if you can, I'd check the serial on lenovo's website too, that's an easy one. You can tell which keyboard and screen panel it mounts without even booting it or disassembling it, unless somebody changed stuff, which is unlikely (check if screws are a bit stripped)

I still use my W550s for shitposting & lightroom no bigger than 24MP jpeg or RAW files. Typin on it now 😀

It just depends on your budget, purpose & life expectation b4 upgrading.

Why is it acceptable for a screen on a $1000+ laptop to have 35+ms pixel response time? Where can I find a laptop that has a good screen and decent color + response time? I recently came across the Lenovo Yoga Slim Pro 7i which has a great display. Seems to be the only one in its class that does.

      >good screen
      >decent color
      >response times
extremely generic terms, go ask that to any salesperson & they'll give you a generic 1080p laptop that meets those expectations.

For the masses, response time is not required.
Some laptops are just built for one thing over the other at lower/cheaper configurations, at the expense of other peformances.

Thinkpads are not known for screen response times either, systems are barely hitting the Dolby HDR standard, and now there's HDR 400, 500, 600 whatever the frick they say.

Some 15 or 16" machines may have the response time you want, as well as color accuracy, brightness and contrast ratio, but for those UHD or WQXGA types, its probably gonna be $2000 for them. I don't think you can configure a T15 in the way you want.

Lads, FHD+ with matte display or UHD with glossy on a xps 15? The price would increase from 1500 to 1700 euros. I want to use it to install Linux on it for coding and developing RAW images. The UHD one seems to be the better choice for that even though the battery life will suffer under it.

I cant stand my Precision 7730 because of its FHD display, I'll use my 3K panel on the W550s because of the higher PPI, (also frick the 1440p panel on the T470p). Get the later, you'll be editing on AC anyways, & you can always scale down under battery.

But I've just mentioned that the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i has a fantastic screen. 400 nit, 100% sRGB, great response time, 90 Hz. The laptop is less than $1000. And the specs are decent. Why can't more manufacturers do this? Apple is about the only one that passes.

Hmh that would make 1700 for a new xps 15 9510.

I know frick all about laptops, I want to buy one for college that will last ~4 years and I can do everything on, including gaming.
I am currently looking at 2 options:

    >Omen 15:
    AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX
    NVIDIA RTX 3070 8GB
    16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz
    1TB M.2 NVMe SSD
    15.6" 2560 x 1440 IPS 165Hz

    >Legion 5
    AMD Ryzen 5 5600H
    NVIDIA RTX 3070 8GB
    16 GB DDR4 2133 MHz
    1TB M.2 NVMe SSD
    15.6" 1920 x 1080 IPS 165Hz

They are the same price nearby vendor. Which one would you recommend?
The Legion 5 seems quite a bit bulkier and has a worse screen, but it looks a bit sturdier.

      Those aren't thinkpads
No. a Ford Focus isn't a ford truck, no a Chevy Aveo isn't a Chevy truck.

We recommend buying off lease, used laptops, without warranty.

With that said, get the one with the longer warranty. IMO the Omen seems to be a better machine if they are the same price, purely off CPU/LCD options.

the frick you need a RTX 3070 for college? What games are you seriously considering to play during college? Do the hard work now, try not to dig into debt, & play when you make the big money.

Not fricking b***hes in college? Not finessing boomers on side gigs & hustling other college students on small work?

you should be able to find a decent used machine for $600 to get u thru college if you don't need to game. Seriously get a switch. last thing u want is your laptop overheating and dying bc u gamed on highest settings & ur running to the library to remake your 10 page essay you didn't save on a thumb drive.

I generally picked the competitor over lenovo's gaming laptop, their specs just don't have enough. Also if this is for college, you should just get some cheap laptop for writing stuff and uploading to the college server, you don't need to spend 2k on a laptop for college.

I test my HDD/SSDs with parted magic.
it costs like $20 or so for the latest version, majorgeeks has a 2013 rip that does the same stuff. i can't remember if I cant test battery life, maybe with the hardware ID program, but I don't necessarily remember it being well (windows gay here).

Just bought a FHD display for my T440p, however the backlight does not seem to work for the new display. I switched back to the original display and the backlight seemed to work, which leads me to believe the issue is not a blown motherboard fuse. Any idea what the problem might be?

you could of bought the wrong display or its faulty. Doesn't light up under bios at all?

      Should I get t420 or t430?

T420 with the coreboot magic to upgrade to ivy quadcore.

Is X120e a good notebook for browsing and light programming?

you're better off with an 11e.
those ULV AMD cpus from 2011 ain't the biz.

is t480s good? i need a new linux couch machine

T480s and other 8th gen machines have a USB-C issue, that did have a firmware update but some still say there are problems. With that said i don't think it is worse than a T61 w/ nVidia grahics.

Is a beat up x200 worth 30 bucks? A guy I know is selling his for that price. It's functional, just a lot of scratches and a couple cracks on the base and lid. It still has the stock configuration, but I already have most of the parts I'll need to upgrade it. Should I get it?

$30 is a steal when they get picked up for starting around $100 to be resold for at least $200 with libreboot.

Anyone here own Precision M6800? What are your thoughts on it? I'm considering it over a Thinkpad workstation because of the bigger screen and upgradeable GPU. Lenovo had a significant break in making those 17-inch worstation to the point where they're either too weak or too expensive for my budget.

Haven't had a 6800 but someone complained about how sharp the palmrest that it bugged their wrists.
I personally got a Precision 7730 and it's a fair machine other than the meh keyboard & its annoying to press FN + arrow up or down to control the backlight instead any top row function key like all other laptops.

I regret not selling this and trying to get a T480

Is the T480 the best bang for the buck? I would love to mod older models but then again, I could simply use the money to just buy the T480.

Don't do it. Absolutely avoid buying second hand thinkpads newer than -20 series.

Is anyone here (t430 cpu swap)-pilled here?
    >Core i7 2670QM replacement burns hot as a furnace in hell
So I fell for the t430 4 core cpu replacement meme. I bought a used t430 off ebay and replaced the cpu with a Intel Core i7 2670QM I bought off ebay for $60. I glued it to the heat sink using liquid metal thermal paste because the stock heat sink wasn't designed to cool a quad core and the temps regularly hoovered around 95c. After adding the liquid metal paste temps regularly hung around 72c to 85c which is an improvement but still not ideal. Is there any way to fight these temps further? I've read online about replacement fans for the t430 with higher heat transfer, does anyone have experience with such?

Bought a replacement classic keyboard to swap with the shitty island style chicklet keyboard that comes with the t430, however I didn't realize virtually every single "new" classic series keyboard you buy online are actually fake chinese imitation keyboards. The fake replacement I got by a brand named 'sunmall' and it feels like absolute crap, it only looks like the classic keyboard but feels like absolute stiff and flimsy garbage. So I guess I'm going to try to find a extremely cheap broken t420 off ebay with a lightly used looking keyboard so I can swap it with a genuine real lenovo made keyboard.
    >battery & cable
Got a replacement charging cable off amazon too and again it's not an actual lenovo cable it's some shitty chinese replica and the power brick on it gets hot...like SCARY HOT (it literally burns to the touch and feels like a fricking hot stove top). It gets so hot it's legitimately freaking me out, as in: I don't feel comfortable just leaving it plugged in while I sleep at night. So my question is what should I do about buying a replacement battery? Because I don't want to buy some fake chinese shit battery which gets fricked up levels hot and fries my laptop or worse burns my entire house down while I'm asleep. What the frick do I do here?

At least it makes some sense when you're trying to double the tdp of your processor but I once bought a pentium 3 laptop that someone put liquid metal on. Now that's just stupid.

3612qm and 3632qm are the only two i think; you can find them in thinkpad e530 and lenovo z580 amongst other laptops, if you can't find them cheaply otherwise

Any t440p tried to upgrade the cooling system? I'm rocking a 4712mq with stock cooler, and it runs in the 60°C while compiling.

dont accept the bullshit that they dont resell equipment. yeah im really gonna believe they recycle laptops for $10 each or $1 a pound.

completely new to buying computers, is the x270 a good one ? the most intensive thing i'd do is play light games (rpgmaker games at most), and i'll mostly use it to write stuff

it's pretty alright, although for writing i think an x230 with the keyboard mod would be a better pick

I have a T14 Gen 1 for over a year now and I realise that some stuff seemed to have been collected under the keyboard keys and also around the edges of the touchpad. How do you guys get under there and clean it up or is it ok to just leave it? It's some dust and small stuff.

    Z13, thoughts?

I get a deal with work and to be honest finding 32gb semi business laptop is hard in the uk.
The advertised battery life is a major selling point for me.

The keyboard and trackpoint are fricked up beyond repair. It also looks stupid. They just keep butchering the brand the best they can.

        Open to suggestions.
Needs something with 13-14 screen, current amd for battery life 11+ hours and 32gb ram. Resolution would be nice.
For some moronic reason most companies dont sell 32gb machines in uk.

They didn't even stop there. They removed a couple buttons from the keyboard too. It's like they really do hate what everyone else liked about the classic thinkpads and made this flashy gold/leather thing with a keyboard ripped straight out of a 300€ hp laptop.

What spec do i go for when I need laptop for my shed to program CNC and printer.
Need to use solidworks, Browser, Cura, IDE and will use laptop "docked" with dual 1080p60hz pannels with 4 usb ports for Mouse, kb, 2.5 inch portable hdd, usb card reader.

I think any intel 4core with integrated graphics from 6th gen or later will be ok.

locally there is thinkpad x1 touch 4k ips without 360 degree hinge with i5 8250u for 400 usd?

On other hand there are a lot of new devices like GPD and steamdeck with amd soc. Maybe amd soc would be better for longrun.

Got a e14 gen2 amd pretty cheap second-hand (450$, but that's cheap in Russia, all other e14s were like 700+)
Bargained because of a small "scratch" on the screen, the seller tried to wipe it off, didn't succeed, lowered the price.
I came home, and turns out it was just a pretty stuck-on dirt. Nice.
Compared to my previous machine -- a t420, this one has a way better screen (will probably still mod a 1080p IPS screen into the t420 and give it to my parents), better portability in the thickness/weight sense, stuff like that.
What I don't like is that changing the keyboard is waaay more hard to change now, the battery is internal and that the speakers are facing down. Other than that -- a pretty nice machine to be honest. Build quality is on par with my old t420 to be quite honest. The top and bottom covers are aluminium, and everything else is a quite sturdy plastic. Virtually no flex both in the keyboard and in the deck itself.
Seems like E-series are quite nice on newer machines.

what ports do i need to make sure i have on my thinkpad to use any peripheral i want in the future? like i think i need a thunderbolt port to use a dock for multiple displays? but i don't need a smart card reader if i can buy an external reader.
