I think there was some drama about there being ads in the player, but iirc this was because people were downloading a fake version of it from a different site that came bundled with ads, though don't quote me on that. Personally I never saw ads on it as long as I was using it.
Also I don't like mpv, but even that is leagues ahead of vlc if you don't want to config anything or don't mind using a frontend that some people here have mentioned. It's not as good as madvr, but it is pretty close unlike vlc.

I've always loved MPC-HC, but it slows to a crawl with certain styled softsubs, even with Xysubfilter or clsid2's internal renderer. I had to resort to mpv over the weekend for Jigokuraku.
Worse, the newer MPC Video Renderer has terrible upscaling no matter which algorithm you pick. You get better results with plain old bilinear on Enhanced Video Renderer (custom presenter).
OH, and now that I look, MPC Video Renderer still fricks up colors too! That's the reason I stopped using it last time I tried it. (But to be fair, it looks like mpv is brighter than EVR(CP) too. Wonder who's doing it right.)
For comparison, first here's MPC-HC with EVR(CP) and bilinear upscaling.
Here's MPC-HC with MPCVR and its default Catmull-Rom upscaling. Note the pixelated edges on the flower petals. Every other algorithm it offers looks like ass too.
And here's mpv with whatever the frick its defaults are. Upscaling looks fine. Colors look brightened compared to EVR(CP), but not as green-tinted as MPCVR.
The main problem is the devs unironically don't know what they're doing. All of the scalers that have been implemented into the renderer are just HLSL ports of libretro shaders, which is an emulator frontend. They don't even test this shit most of the time.
Another niche feature I found useful on mpv was the ability to load a second set of subtitles at the top of the screen. Although I had to modify uosc to give me a GUI for it.
Basically MPC is starting to show its age for me, despite clsid2's best efforts to spruce it up. Sub-handling is no longer being developed (as far as I know) so fancy subs will stay laggy, and new renderer development seems to be going awry.
In comparison, updating mpv is a pain, maybe since I do it so infrequently that I feel safer scrapping and reimplementing all my customizations each time, in case something changed in between. Maybe I'll smoothen the workflow at some point.

Imagine having to install 60+ external codecs, each polluting your system as separate DLLs with different hooks in the system registry, half of them spawning separate threads and systray icons whenever you fire up a process. I tried it out but I wanted to bind something and there wasn't an option for it, but haruna had it so I went with that. It's a bit more customizable and it also looks modern as well.

yeah it's the vanilla mpc but they added some new features to it, and it's being actively developed with bug fixes too. The last update was like 2 weeks ago iirc. It updates more frequently too.

I think there was some drama about there being ads in the player, but iirc this was because people were downloading a fake version of it from a different site that came bundled with ads, though don't quote me on that. Personally I never saw ads on it as long as I was using it.
Also I don't like mpv, but even that is leagues ahead of vlc if you don't want to config anything or don't mind using a frontend that some people here have mentioned. It's not as good as madvr, but it is pretty close unlike vlc.

I've always loved MPC-HC, but it slows to a crawl with certain styled softsubs, even with Xysubfilter or clsid2's internal renderer. I had to resort to mpv over the weekend for Jigokuraku.
Worse, the newer MPC Video Renderer has terrible upscaling no matter which algorithm you pick. You get better results with plain old bilinear on Enhanced Video Renderer (custom presenter).
OH, and now that I look, MPC Video Renderer still fricks up colors too! That's the reason I stopped using it last time I tried it. (But to be fair, it looks like mpv is brighter than EVR(CP) too. Wonder who's doing it right.)
For comparison, first here's MPC-HC with EVR(CP) and bilinear upscaling.
Here's MPC-HC with MPCVR and its default Catmull-Rom upscaling. Note the pixelated edges on the flower petals. Every other algorithm it offers looks like ass too.
And here's mpv with whatever the frick its defaults are. Upscaling looks fine. Colors look brightened compared to EVR(CP), but not as green-tinted as MPCVR.
The main problem is the devs unironically don't know what they're doing. All of the scalers that have been implemented into the renderer are just HLSL ports of libretro shaders, which is an emulator frontend. They don't even test this shit most of the time.
Another niche feature I found useful on mpv was the ability to load a second set of subtitles at the top of the screen. Although I had to modify uosc to give me a GUI for it.
Basically MPC is starting to show its age for me, despite clsid2's best efforts to spruce it up. Sub-handling is no longer being developed (as far as I know) so fancy subs will stay laggy, and new renderer development seems to be going awry.
In comparison, updating mpv is a pain, maybe since I do it so infrequently that I feel safer scrapping and reimplementing all my customizations each time, in case something changed in between. Maybe I'll smoothen the workflow at some point.
