Chance of a battery burning my house down

I own dozens of old android devices that I sometimes tinker with by writing custom ROM software, when I feel like it.
What is the risk of an old battery catching fire by itself? Can I manage the risk? Again, I do this just for fun, I'll give all of this up if that means one day I don't wake up in hellfire.

Low but not zero. You can mitigate the risks by storing them in metal containers (don't have to be sealed) away from easily burnable items.

Any old metal box will do?
      >(don't have to be sealed)
      Why not?

I used to work for a cellphone maker. People in such a company have at least 5-10 older device flying around in their desks. Back when those had replaceable batteries, at least a dozen of those too. And that was >1000 workers in the building.
There never was a single fire. We never even worried about that. And that's with prototype devices in the mix too. The battery charging logic and protection circuit is always low level hardware unaffected by firmware.

      >The battery charging logic and protection circuit is always low level hardware unaffected by firmware.
I sort of knew that. I wasn't so much worried about my OS tinkering causing a fire, more so a battery I didn't notice is degraded igniting randomly.

My understanding is that there will be some swelling first.

          >What is the risk of an old battery catching fire by itself?
Moderate in the medium term, pretty high in the long term when you're talking about a range of old mobile devices with thin Li-Ion cells constrained by the case of the battery. One of those swells up enough, gets punctured by the casing, and cooks off... almost inevitable eventually.

          >Can I manage the risk? Again, I do this just for fun, I'll give all of this up if that means one day I don't wake up in hellfire.
Yes. Some of the phones have removable batteries and will run on a cord without the battery inserted - Get rid of the batteries for those and use them without. For the rest, you have a range of options. You could get rid of the oldest ones to mitigate the highest risks. You could keep them in a place with a smoke alarm overhead so if they do cook off, you are alerted quickly to the situation and can either escape or fight the fire. Speaking of which, regular extinguishers aren't effective, but some specialized ones are available. If you have a suitable place, you could also store them outside your living area e.g. in a shed or garage so that if they do cook off, the damage is limited. Gotta be a bit careful with that last option though, since temperature and humidity swings can speed up the battery degredation and increase the odds of a fire.

          >My understanding is that there will be some swelling first.
There will but this is where the problem lies - When a battery swells inside a phone it doesn't have anywhere to go and the casing presses against it. If this leads to the battery wrap being pierced, you get an oxygen reaction with the lithium in the cell and now you have a fire. Storing the batteries outside the phones can be a good way to both observe for any swelling and prevent the phone shell from piercing the batteries, but this only works if the battery is removable.

Phone batteries are relatively safe. Keep them in metal or pottery boxes if you're worried. They'll die and leak before they catch fire.

I've had a faulty vacuum cleaner battery catch fire at my parents' last year. I just had used the vacuum and the battery started melting and spouting flames.
