Are viruses in "safe" torrents like fitgirl repacks or whatever actually that common these days?

the people cracking software are probably the most qualified to make malware that goes undetected

I only monitor outcoming network connection, unless it sends megabytes of data or anything suspicious, i don't care.

You realize a keylogger would only send a some kilobytes once every few days right

still don't care, my accounts are perma logged in, i rarely type both the email and the password, and my email is linked to my phone number, every other account has a simple password because i just don't care if i lost it, i can recover it with email, if not then it doesn't matter
i'm more concerned about trojans sending camera pictures and screenshots, and those always have the biggest filesizes.

what identity? i use social media purely as a messaging platform, i don't post jackshit on them, no pictures no funny shit, even when i was a teen i had a throwaway anime profile for posting memes.
it's people's fault for sharing personal stuff on public platforms, leaks happen all the time, not to mention the snowden crap.
just accept that "everything you say/do can be used against you" and never share stuff that will embarrasse you or can be used against you. the internet is not your house, you can't go around with your pants down expecting nobody to see.

When someone is talking about identity theft, they mean someone getting your SIN and address and using it to enroll for services as you.

i do have a job, i also live in a country where it requires having physical presence to enroll for services. what kind of moron allowed subscription to shit with pure online informations, no phone confirmations, and no 2FA? not even credit cards can do that anymore.

            Anonymous

Bro you dont get it. They dont steal your existing accounts, that's the entire point.
They take your INFORMATION and use it to get a SIM card and new phone number in your name. They use that phone number to create bank accounts, fill out tax forms, etc. Etc.
They are literally stealing your identity and masquerading as you.
That can be done just by having someones social security number current &past addresses, and enough information about them to begin creating new accounts in their name.

            Anonymous

I'm telling you, you cannot register a SIM card with your name online in my country, you need to fill physical paper and be present physically to sign more papers just so they can link it to you. Bank accounts are even more complicated than that because some banks straight up take camera feeds to ensure physical presence just to circumvent those problems, you need to go to the bank yourself to acquire your credit card, and the password is sent to your home address that is written in your citizenship card. These days you can post a picture of your credit card and nobody can use it to buy shit because you get a phone confirmation PER PURCHASE, the have to physically steal both your card and your phone to do anything but you could cancel your card with a single phone call. The only way people get scammed is if they themselves do the procedure or one of the banking staff goes rogue.

It's an issue with your fragile and trash system, how the frick did your people not change it and made it more fool proof is beyond me.

Why would malware pop up a terminal window rather than just installing silently?

I've had this happen on fresh installs of Windows even when I've used a genuine Microsoft ISO. Is it a big meme?

That's less than your scree refresh rate. You would only be able to see it on average once every 16.6 installs, assuming 60hz refresh rate.
