i think donatello's david is an example of the renaissance trying to revive the classical homosexuality. it was the first freestanding male nude made since antiquity. clearly, there is a lot of homoeroticism going on here. for example, look at how part of goliath's helmet is creeping up david's thigh. i think touching someones thigh that high up is a little inappropriate

homosexualry was deeply rooted in the Greco-Roman World. Almost as deep as my dick was in your effeminate ass last night.

Sure, but nonetheless they were gay.

      You're a homosexual shitskin.

da Vinci was twice denounced for sodomy, but there are many records of people (noblemen, even clergies, even Popes) engaging in homosexual activities, keeping male lovers and such and the general consensus seemed to be OK with it as long as you don't go over the top with it.

Really? I thought the church would of hated it.

I know that in classical antiquity, the rules were usually “if you dont frick a man in the ass, it’s not gay” or “as long as you’re the one fricking and not getting fricked, it’s not gay”. Did they have similar rules in the Renaissance?

In theory yes but because of mandatory clerical celibacy the medieval clergy was filled with homosexuals and pedophiles, with thints getting more gay and more pedophilic the higher up in the heirarchy you went. Interestingly this is a trend that continues to this day.

the church did hate it. but they were not all powerful. they couldnt even completely get rid of it within their own ranks to this day.

Accusing others of sodomy was an often used means on someone you were conspiring against. It's like telling the FBI your ex is a pedo with CP in his house.

We should return to the tradition of depicting nude beautiful men

  5. 2 years ago

Seems far fetched. There is little explicitly homosexual art besides Antinous, a heterosexual male under medieval Catholicism like Donatello would be oblivious to homosexuality. The decision to sculpt him supple and smooth was more to exemplify his youth and physical smallness relative to Goliath. This is what other heterosexuals would pick up on, how a boy defeated a giant. It was the equivalent of some zoomer squaring off against Roque Martinez and winning. That is the whole theme of the piece and explains the art style.

it was the first freestanding male nude since antiquity. there is a reason he was depicted nude. also, if you look at his sassy pose and the helmet touching his thighs, it is clear there are suggestive themes of homoeroticism

That is just wrong. The criminal records of medieval Florence show that homosexual relations were rife among men, with younger men basically serving as bottoms for the older men before become tops in turn as they got older. It was a way of having sex without getting women pregnant, and before a young man was able to afford to marry and start a family

Florence was the gay capital of the world during the renaissance. The word 'Florentine' became a synonym for homosexual. The church even funded borthels to fight the homosexualry.

Homosexuality was usually seen as childish or irresponsible, instead of having kids you were just fricking and having fun. Marriage wasn't about spending the rest of your life with someone you love, it was about making more people for your community
