GitHub replacements

This thread is for discussion of: https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2022/jun/30/give-up-github-launch/

Regardless of the Copilot thing, it's obvious to most people that it's kind of ridiculous to host open source projects on a closed source service. But the solution is obviously not for everyone to move to GitLab or sr.ht, since those, while maybe not being closed source software are still controlled by private companies.

Could there be something like a federated "social network" (this is essentially what GitHub is, in addition to repository features) built on top of Git? Does such a project exist? If not, are there any definite reasons for that?

The way it could work is a repository "lives" on one instance, where it is configured and where CI/CD happens, but because of federation, forks, issues, comments, PRs, etc. are also allowed by users on other instances.

It does seem like GitLab could be getting federation eventually, but it's unlikely to happen anytime soon: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/issues/6468. I wonder if there would be a way to integrate an existing social platform like Mastodon with a Git service like GitLab or Gitea.

Why would I care that a machine is helping me write code when that's what a compiler does also.

        >allows you to use an environment of your liking
This was solved almost two decades ago. We didn't listen to the boomers and now we are paying the consequences.

You're not getting the point though. Besides hosting, GitHub's main features are acting like a social network and like a resume.

            >and like a resume
that's easily replaced by linking to your personal website with a list of all of your commits to notable open source projects

Facebook and Twitter are easily replaced by linking to your personal blog. Don't forget to add the guestbook and visit counter.

Do Americans really need a Facebook and Twitter just to apply to jobs? lmfao

Everytime I post about this in IQfy I'm called a schizo. History is repeating itself: Microsoft is using both public and PRIVATE repositories for their benefit.

In my opinion it's useless because of this mentality

Just like all the morons on Instagram, being socially programmed and not giving a frick. It's the easy choice.

            >Who cares if Microsoft is doing this? I need my profile badges and my commit chart is green.

Yes, the point is to have a federated social platform that also has Git integration like GH. So we can get away from GH. People aren't just going to abandon those features.

git + mailing lists + mailing git patches

This is what I do. git (http read only hosting) + cgit + mail (patches). There are no stupid patches, only patches to change functionality or add new functionality. Most of the people that send patches are either coomers or free software schizos/extremists. Those are the most motivated people when it comes to adding functionality they want.

I have a copy of the github source code and it seems fine, so I'm not really worried about it.

    >In 2020, the community discovered that GitHub has a for-profit software services contract with the USA Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Activists, including some GitHub employees, have been calling on GitHub for two years to cancel that contract. GitHub's primary reply has been that their parent company, Microsoft, has sold Microsoft Word for years to ICE without any public complaints. They claim that this somehow justifies even more business with an agency whose policies are problematic. Regardless of your views on ICE and its behavior, GitHub's ongoing dismissive and disingenuous responses to the activists who raised this important issue show that GitHub puts its profits above concerns from the community.
