I envy americans because you basically do your masters as an undergrad. In Mexico not only is my degree in Math 5 years, but it doesn't prepare me for research.

cant believe there are homies writing their PHD's who still post basedjaks on iranian salmon fishing forums.

Why would you suddenly stop finding soijaks fun? They're the ultimate achievement of the internet, you can always be portrayed as one

        >They're the ultimate achievement of the internet
        The internet itself is.

        You sperm.

And no, you clearly unironically believe that.

Kek where did you get that from? Some US mathlets barely take Abstract Algebra by their final year. You get a masters after the first two years of your PhD.

          >Kek where did you get that from?
I guess I'm thinking on unrealistic top 100 universities then. Because I always hear how you can choose your subjects, often times even being able to choose graduate subjects in your second or third year.
          >You get a masters after the first two years of your PhD
This may be what I'm referring to, you go straight for the PhD, here it's clearly defined to be a Masters before the PhD. Maybe it's just a name thing.

Because regarding the courses, yes I've seen many Mathlets in the US compared to the corresponding semester here.
Second and third semester: Euclidian Geometry, Spivak level Calculus, Linear Algebra (Finite Vector Space Theory).
4 and 5: Second linear algebra course, Multivariable calculus too in an "advanced level".
6 actually starts with baby rudin, which by now should be pretty natural for anyone that didn't struggle with calculus and linear algebra. And we had complex variable, to the level of like Ahlfors if you only went through the basics. So we basically had two metric space topology courses on the same semester.

All of these with a computational course here and there.
After that is Measure theory, some Banach/Hilbert spaces, theory of differential equations; and I feel like they are just keeping you for the last 5th year with not much purpose really, maybe it's about preparing yourself to get into a good graduate university.

I'd guess this is average for the US (with no 5th year), and well below average for west europe (specially France)

This. Its only nice when it's over, Rose tinted glasses etc. I don't get why people even enjoy the modern academic environment. People aren't given and don't take the time to develop new theories, they just try to publish on top of what has already been done. Some rare exceptions and yes there are still incredibly intelligent people in academia - but their capacity to deal with the brown stuff that comes out of a cows behind far exceeds their intelligence

I didn't learn a single thing in university.
It was just desperately trying not to drown under an avalanche of work, struggling to complete assignments and then instantly brain dumping everything and moving on to the next task for """"points""""
I didn't learn a single god damn thing.

Surprised you didn’t learn this from highschool. If you take fast track courses like I am its two days each day, 40 day course. School is just suppose to expose you to what your suppose to learn, its on you to go an learn it later on your own.

I'll be getting the bachelor in my early 30s as well (though remember, it's a europoor country where unis are more classic medieval Bologna style of "how about you do your own shit" and less American adult daycares, so it's not really embarrassing).
I laugh at people that refuse to get a degree just because they are "too old". This just boils down to social rejection fears, which aren't even actually happening in people's minds.
I mean if that's the only reason not to go back to school. If you make mad dosh w/o degree and don't miss the academic experience, great.

How can I get my employer to pay for a graduate degree on my behalf?

      Anonymous

If your grad school doesn't pay you to get the degree, that means you and/or the gradschool are shit. Either way, that's a sign you shouldn't be going there.

      Anonymous

Employers will not pay for a PhD, but it's pretty common for them to pay for a master's, at least in the USA. If it's a job that involves STEM, then ask your boss about it or look at company policy/ask around.

Apply again this year if you really want to do one anon, if you're not "of an underrepresented background" then you pretty much have to be either well-connected or a genius to get into a top 50 school PhD program. I applied to 8 programs, got 4 interviews, and was only accepted to one.

I'm a senior software engineer at Microsoft and am in the top 2% of the GRE. However, I had a GPA when I last went to college (many years ago) of 2.5. Any hope of getting into a decent school for a Master's?

With a very high GRE score, professional experience (assuming you're talking about CS), and reccomendations from people that taught you there's a good chance you could get into many PhD programs not to speak of Masters.

graduated last year from undergrad, just started my first job... literally a month in and already want to go back to do a grad degree. Academia just seems so much more fulfilling and intellectually stimulating than corporate life, but I can't tell if that's the rose-tint talking or if it really be like that.
