I dont understand the direction of causation here. Is he ashamed because he attended with his real face, or did he attend with his real face because he was ashamed?

As a non-autistic native English speaker, my instincts point to the former being the correct interpretation.

How? It's clearly the former. You just lack reading comprehension.

It's not clear to an ESL, as Kafka left out a "that" in the second half of the sentence, "and that I had attended with my real face".

This is without getting into the unnecessary semicolon in the sentence; The sentence should have read "I had attended with my real face".

Basically it confuses and angers the ESL.

All he had to do was say “had attended” to clarify the attending happened before the ashamed.

Are you all moronic? He's saying to get the best out of life, to achieve what you want. You must market yourself a certain way (costume) and he's ashamed to show the world as he is without a "costume" because he's found himself to be left behind, put in vulnerable positions and failing compared to those that market themselves in a way that helps them climb a social ladder.

I could probably word that a bit better, but frick it.

he's saying that everyone lies, and he was too foolish to see it. everyone cheats and he thought everyone was playing the game fairly.

he feels stupid because he just realized what everyone else knew from the start

This zeitgeist is only tolerable to women and their vapid veganal vibes, men are either successful but secretly miserable pretenders or failed and openly miserable rejects.

Its like leaving children off for wolves by allowing by negligence them to be THIS emotionally unintelligent.

How is life a costume party?

      Anonymous

Because everyone are pretending to be someone else when in public and dealing with others. Nobody is exposing their true self to others. They walk around through life wearing different masks and costumes for different occasions and people. Only autists act like their true autistic selves, which often makes the normie afraid and confused.

Why is the one in private not equally disingenious as that is who you are pretending to be to yourself and potentially God?

I'm beginning to realize that myself. Like William Shakesman said, "all the world's a stage and all the men and women [and trans-folks] are merely players". Everyone are larping as some character depending upon the situation and the people they're with, pretending to be the protagonists of their own stories and trying to compose a grand tale that they can be proud of at the end of their lives.

Meanwhile, my autistic self has been walking around on this stage completely naked (so to speak) in my own skin, exposing my true self to everyone during every interaction, warts and all. No wonder I can't play this game of collective larp, because I'm a shitty actor, and I have no interest in indulging in delusions.

that's because society is created by men for women, and women have no personality,. They go from one costume to the next, like a perpetual succession of carnival.

conceptualizing yourself is a inseparable part of being yourself. It's not quite fabricating a fake personality or "not being yourself", but showing the "face" you choose to show in your personality. You choose and create the mask you wear, and where you wear it.

Plenty of hints are in the thread for who supplies the theory. I haven't read much kafka but,

      read Jung
