Left vs Right is really collectivism vs individualism. The problem is collectivism, is that it rarely represents the collective and is usually run by an inner group who make decisions that implement limits on the individual for the good of the collective. When this works it can be glorious but the collective rarely understands fringe beliefs or innovations and is easily led by propaganda which is why the power is always concentrated at the top. Even if it did, the only way to genuinely represent everyone would be to find the lowest common denominator which should not be the standard.
Individualism obviously has its flaws in that it enables people to overstep and cause problems for the greater whole but actually allows diversity (not force diversity) since it should recognise different but equal. The main advantage is that no matter how wrong the people in power are, there is potential for innovations/positive risks to come from individuals to shift things back on the right track. This is very evident in the technology field where as an example the powers at be thought the idea of personal computers and the internet was stupid.

"Leftism" or the left is first of all not a transhistorical category. The existence of the left is historically contingent, which means that it had a definite condition of possibility which only appeared at a certain point of social development. That point was the emergence of mass politics in Europe in the latter half of the 18th century. It is incoherent to project this category further back into history in order to recuperate or condemn prominent individuals ("Jesus was a leftist") and social movements, as leftists and others often do.
The left is a political orientation that seeks social change in the direction of universal emancipation, which means a liberation from bondage of all kinds, both physical and mental, for everyone, unconditionally. The leftist does not have permanent enemies, only temporary ones; the emancipation of the slave simultaneously liberates the master. The end state of universal emancipation is the expansion of human freedom to its greatest possible extent. This requires a continuous process of social transformation that adapts its methods to new conditions and new social contradictions.
