He never got his doctorate, he did all the coursework for a doctorate but never bothered with the dissertation that would have granted him a Ph.D.

If he was going through university in the 21st century, he would have no doubt dropped out at the first sign of being forced to run Microsoft Windows to do coursework.

Dennis Ritchie did the same thing, he actually wrote his dissertation, but refused to pay the administrative fee at Harvard to get it bound and "submitted for review", at which point he didn't care because he had already gotten recruited by Bell Labs, AT&T was very angry when they found out their star catch didn't get his Ph.D.

If your admin is not an ass you can connect to your Microsoft mail with imap and smtp.

        Anonymous

not entirely true. Microsoft is shutting off basic auth on all o365 tenants to prevent password spray. 99.9% of IMAP/SMTP uses basic, but oauth support has been available to use since 2020. Thing about oauth support for those protocols is the admin has to create an app registration and then share the client ID and Client secret with everyone who wants to use them. They also expire after 2 years max, so imagine the flood of calls when people forget to update that shit (in addition to their password). No one in a small/medium IT org wants to support that shit.

I like how Skype had been around for well over 10 years, and it was always a pile of shit. Then Zoom showed up and it was everything that Skype never was. In response, we get Teams, and it sucks too.

Does Microsoft insist on make garbage?

Skype was great until Microsoft got their claws on it. Then it became a spammed piece of shit that didn't actually work. They bought Skype just to kill it.

Teams existed before zoom and teams is more of a slack alternative than zoom.

          Anonymous

True. But while zoom and teams technically have different purposes there's still some overlap in functionality. And as Zoom gets older the devs have to keep adding more and more collab features which will eventually make it a teams competitor.

          explain

why not use a open source alternative?

          >why not use a open source alternative?

I know there's FOSS for specific tasks but nothing that has everything integrated like Teams or Slack. Plus you need a cloud service to serve the apps too and most companies don't have the know how to do that.

BTW, not defending Teams or Slack or any of this shit. I fricking hate collab tools. Just give me a simple XMPP chat app. That's literally all I need.

Those apps are all decent apps, but they're still not as fully featured as Teams. Some of those apps like Element.io don't even have desktop clients.

There's a reason I hate Teams. It's bloated as frick. But that bloat is something a lot of companies value. The company I used to work for before going independent chose Teams for Office integration/compatibility. That has nothing to do with chatting but it's huge in a lot of archaic workplaces.

i'm not saying there aren't ways to circumvent the teams israelite, but it's so fricking ass, they should just use better software instead of tormenting the wagies because it looks professional and it's from a rich company.
          >That you run in your browser where it can't spy on you. As long as you're either using Firefox or have disabled the Chromium wageslave monitoring feature, of course.
i didn't mean the spying from microsoft there, though of course that's awful too. i was talking about the more immediate threat of getting fricked over by your manager. these bloodthirsty motherfrickers will make you turn on the camera, for no reason other than the fact that you must feel tormented at work and their jobs are pointless because all they do is make life miserable for their coworkers, and are under active pressure to keep doing so in spite of the empathy some of the nonbugmen feel towards their fellow wagies

            Anonymous

You are of course 100% spot-on about managers, but this isn't a problem that can be solved by technology. If they weren't tormenting you through Teams they'd be doing so through Zoom, or WebEx, or just by forcing you to be in an office so they can do it IRL.

What a gem of a software, coming from a corporation as large as Microsoft. It's amazing, that the world's best talent made this.

Companies actually are paying for this product. Even the worst of opensource solutions are better, by far and free. Any half-assed tech aware person can setup a more reliable solution on their network.

Teams literally refreshes the screen after every message received, it shakes, it vibrates, then randomly twitches.

You could be typing a message, the message trails on your own screen, as if you're 10 light seconds away from your desktop.

You could press enter at the end of the sentence, and the Enter key will cut your message in half.

I've had two corporate jobs before. In both of them I worked exclusively in a Linux VM; surprise surprise I was way more productive than those that didn't. Also I have an aws box w/o dns set up which use as a proxy out of the corporate firewall. It would probably get me fired but w/o it can basically not work properly.
