You want to learn english by reading non-fictions books full of technical terms that were made up 50 years ago by a bunch of conceited academics?

No, I'm looking for good books that a non-specialist can read. History, social sciences, biographies, etc.

If anything, you might find diction to be more useful. They usually handle far out there concepts you'd find yseful for enlarging your vocab, even if its geeky terms. Theyre way more useful than reading shakesoeare for the expressions. Not as refined tho

Thank you, what would you recommend from written in English?

A Little History of the World by E. H. Gombrich. He wrote it for a friend's daughter, but it's accessible for all ages, and not too full of jargon as a result.

First off ignore all the homosexuals above me.

Second its better if you start with fiction since then you'll get a grasp of how language flows in a conversation.

Third, start with easy to read pulpy genre fiction like crime novels or anything else that is easy to read and keeps you engaged. Then move on to classics like Dickens' works or Wuthering Heights.

For non fiction better stick to newspapers.

How good is your English? If it's good enough to be reading non-fiction, try reading something more classic like the Origin of Species.
