Is slatestarcodex.com the smartest guy alive?

Everything he writes is like pure distilled intellect.

No, too turdy and wishy-washy. IQ-obsessed. Hilariously brought attention to his "doxxing" that he seemed to desperately want to minimize. Not to mention his stupid rigged-gambling-prediction posts. "I'm betting you will ban me (for doing nothing because the guy knows scott will fall for it) and betting I will appeal" whatever the frick I can't remember and then he just bans him so it's self-fulfilling . Should have made him do something ban-worthy man. "20% I will get in a poly relationship"... really. Beyond idiotic. And his book reviews... not what I would call book reviews. Maybe book essays (and that's fine but I get triggered by calling them reviews, my own fault). But I still read him, and more importantly, some of his regular commenters are much smarter than he is.

What kind of wastes of sentient life engage in actual discourse in his comment section? Especially when it's a comment section full of people smarter than the owner of the page that contains the comment section?

Most of his content is useless. He's undoubtedly intelligent but wastes said intelligence on pointless abstractions and hypotheticals. Also Moldbug unironically mogs these 'rationalist' morons, by miles.

Yeah, it's really great. IQfy doesn't actually read though, so you'll only negative views on it here

He and his rationalist community are distilled reddit, but not in a bad way. The old reddit, before the israelites took over with Ellen Pao and all that. A bunch of severily autistic techbro nerds who sit in a circle pondering useless bullshit on a quite high level. I read it when the topic interests me.

He's pretty cool, but he can't write characters with deeper human emotions for shit, and it really shows when he isn't writing short stories or abstract essays.

      So, like, his one novel?

        Anonymous

Yes, UNSONG shows that he's quite limited in his own way. The characters and their "relationships" are, without exception, lazy, if artfully executed stereotypes without depth or meaningful internal conflicts. The one part of the novel that has any life to it beyond wordplay is the chapters focusing on the autistic angel.

Why do these geeks call themselves rationalists? What does the title mean, exactly. Is that yudkowski guy also a rationalist?

it is culture from a website called lesswrong, basically an attempt to make rationality a virtue and argue as far removed from emotions as possible

This is untrue though. EY has a whole article about how rationality != emotionlessness. Can't recall the name unfortunately.

The funny this is that despite calling themselves rationalists, they're clearly empiricists. They couldn't even get the self-aggrandizing name for their movement right.

It is probably just for show since "rational" is a word people know. moronic nonetheless.

the community that has grown around ssc etc is also pretty sound, in the sense that they actually put effort into intelligent discussion - which is always harder to find in online communities. shame it's just bible study for effective eltruism

He seems pretty dumb when it comes to commie-nism. I don't know what possesses supposedly "smart" people to take libertarianism seriously. He actually takes charter cities seriously as a utopian vision. What a fricking clown thought. But I'd be lying if I said I don't think back to the blog posts that I've read, so he must be doing something right.

Also not at all impressed with "rationalists" whom seem anything but. Just autists that are emotional/irrational in that autistic way, that is screeching rage when you say or do something outside of their little order of what is right. If they "discourse" in their own little preconceived rules of order then they are supposedly being """rational"""" but they show no major capability of serious consideration outside those self-set lines. The Quokka meme is dead on describing these people. But then maybe I'm the bad guy, since I'm not thinker myself. Who knows.

It's just a safe space for "moderate" conservatives and libertarians, but if you try to point this out they just tell you they're ultra rational and have no political bias. Essentially the people that say "the problem isn't capitalism, it's crony capitalism!"
And you may be reading my comment and calling me a moron Marxist but whatever, at least I admit where I'm coming from unlike most people who say highly political things and say "I'm not being political it's just the rational thing to do."

Mostly I think you're moronic because rationalists definitely do not claim to be free if political bias

They claim to be the “gray tribe” which is even worse. Techies are a scourge.

        Agree with this.

Scott is fine when he stays in his lane, same with Gwern. Good info on drugs, AI stuff, other random things. The issue is when they take their stem way of looking at things and try to apply it to the humanities with the same overconfidence as every other under-read stemlord who tries to reinvent the wheel. Pure unadulterated cringe. People who are “smart” are not necessarily wise and will usually have massive blind spots.
