They're only visible to the naked eye in particular conditions. You can see lots of satellites in orbit already if you take the time to look, the ISS is so bright you can even see it in the middle of cities with light pollution bad enough to wash out all the stars. It's really not as doom and gloom as some people would have you believe, and much of the opposition to it is probably funded/provoked by China and Russia, who fear America developing these sort of capabilities.
