China is the worst example you could name. Let's count the native dynasties that ruled the vast majority if not mostly all of China for long periods of time. Ming, Song, Tang, Han. Those together add up to more than HALF. The only notable foreign dynasties that ruled a significant chunk of China and were NOT rump states or "dynasties" that collapsed in 20 years were the tuoba Wei, the Jurchen Jin, Qing and Yuan. Only the last 2 controlled all of China, not even 400 years out of China's history. With the other two you get 600.

A couple other exceptions, Japan's basically always been independent. Germany and France had local dynasties and independence throughout most of their history. Not never just rare and being either isolated or the local power helps.
