Well, it's become sort of a cornerstone of (white) Southern identity and culture, so that gives the whole thing a bit more longevity. So long as there's an identification with that region, it's inhabitants, and its' history there will remain a fascination with the Confederacy among those inhabitants.
However, we may see other regional identities overtake this (ie: Texans giving more of a shit about Texas being Texas than about it being Southern/formerly Confederate, the expansion of the DC metro area having developed much of Virginia into the southernmost node of the Northeastern economic/cultural region rather than a core part of the South, most of Florida outside the panhandle becoming a strange blend of retirees and the children of Cuban exiles, etc) so I figure we'll see a much-reduced area and population which even considers itself 'Southern' in the traditional sense.

I'm saying that identity and culture follow interaction, and that major portions of what was once part of the Confederacy are now more strongly integrated into non-Southern systems than they are into the rest of the South.
For frick's sake, the former Confederate capital is now the southernmost node in the Northeastern urban corridor. That's a core part of 'The South' that is no longer meaningfully Southern in any way. That has an effect on identity.

It's declined hard over the years, the Confederacy went from being pretty normalized last generation to a definite fringe political statement in most of the South in recent years. civil war reenactment is collapsing as a common thing as well because sponsors don't want to get associated with the CSA. The Confederate flag waving is going to become even more of an extremist fringe by the next generation, and basically dead by the next. In the 1970s when the Stone Mountain Confederate monument was unveiled vice president Spiro Agnew attended the ceremony; that would never happen today, and southerners are taking down the statues all over the place.

Actual neo-confederate thinking was never really popular and declined after the end of segregation.
Confederate symbolism lived on as a sign of regional patriotism (mostly non-racial) until the 90s. From the 90s onwards there was a continuous decline of popularity of southern symbols. The real hate against them started in the mid 2010s.
Real pushback against tearing down statues, monuments and flags only existed in 2015/16, after that the pro-confederate symbols crowd was almost always on the defensive.
Funny thing is that in most of the South, most people are stilll opposed to tearing down statues (although opposition is slowly declining) according to polls. Cities (unsurprisingly), but even red counties are tearing them down regardless.

Up until the 90s you had confederate flags being flown without issue by southern soldiers, is naval vessels being named after confederate veterans, and US presidents (northern or southern) praising confederates like Lee as role models of American patriotism, human heroism, and gentlemanly moral character. Actual Americans don’t seethe endlessly or post Sherman memes OR anti-yankee memes. They acknowledge it as a tragic war between brothers that thankfully ended quickly, and has been settled mostly amicably.
