Are you implying they're going to make two different phones for each region with different ports? That's moronic. Apple has specifically gone out of the way to have as few regional versions as possible. If they have to use usb-c in the EU than it'll just apply to all iPhone. Now I'm expecting them to just straight up ignore this law and pay the fines to use lightning away.

        Anonymous

I don't think they actually make much money selling lightning cables any more. You can buy chink cables in any gas station for just a dollar now. The macbooks use USB-C, it would make more sense to unify around that.

          Anonymous

You may be right but I'd think they would've already relented and switched if that was the case.

Chinese iPhones have dual sim support and Japanese ones have a different NFC system which the nips use for train tickets. Apple obviously can make regional changes.

          Anonymous

And the rest of the world uses the exact same model of iPhone. That's not an accident. They did it to reduce costs. They'd need two different molds and assembly lines to make the hole different sizes in different regions. That's a massive waste of money.

It was only a matter of time, the iPad already has USB-C in Europe.

It's a great idea on paper but it's actually moronic. They needed fricking years to approve a law about dictating the use of USB-C, which is already getting pretty old.
Maybe the next standard will be introduced in a year... I just hope its inventor lives in the USA, because right now there's no way it would take off in Europe.
As of now, the only way to get "progress" is for something to acquire widespread market adoption in US, then wait a few years for euro lawmakers to write a law that replaces the current one.

Because of this law, Europe will always be lagging behind in terms of tech and progress.
If US does something similar, we'll be facing dictated technological stagnation, and we'll have to rely on fricking China or India.

ironically thats true because it wont be possible anymore to bring a new connector to the market without decade long legal battles with the empire which of course only the largest tech-monopolies are able to afford.

All they gotta do is add an expiration date to the requirement. The inertia required to switch back to something proprietary after expiration would be too high as customers would expect things to still work but eventually somebody would come up with a standard that is better and worth switching to and everybody would just switch.
Being forced to switch now would make them think twice about not going to the new standard later unless they had a really good reason not to because they would just get forced to switch again if they frick it up.

By EU law they are required to have USB-C now.

Apple chargers are much older than USB-C

Only the lightning charger is older than USB-C. This law is not only for phone chargers. It's required for all electronic devices to have USB-C charging ports. Handheld devices by 2024 and laptops 2026, thus the recently returned and updated magsafe is going byebye.

Requiring phones to have a charger port is moronic. I've used exclusively magsafe wireless for two years. Without the dumb port phones could be waterproofed and made much more durable since the PCB doesn't need to extend through the case.

      Anonymous

      >used wireless sometimes just because
      >turbo heated my phone and damaged the battery
It's a terribly flawed tech and I'm not looking forward to the day when they get rid of ports. People will be replacing their batteries once a year because of that excess heat.

      Anonymous

      >Without the dumb port phones could be waterproofed and made much more durable
Waterproof USB-C ports have existed as long as USB-C itself has. Idiots made the same argument with headphone jacks when those have been made waterproof before they were on cellphones.
As for durability, noone has given a single shit about durability since phone manufacturers decided to start sandwiching their devices between two pieces of glass because it feels more "premium"

            >Replacing lightning with USB C is much easier
Some guy did that mod himself, it was literally just "drill a bigger hole in the case, and solder on the connector with bent pins to match the pads on the PCB.
All Apple need to do is add that bigger hole to their CNC, and make circuit boards with the pads spaced out appropriately. It's not even like they need to add a USB3 controller, nobody is transferring data over the cable nowadays anyway so USB2 is fine. They can just leave the extra pins detached.

no anon. innovation is still totally possible.
its just that from now on the whole industry has to come together to decide on a new standard and then they have to convince the eu which is totally not a big deal (even tho eu still can say no since now a bunch of bureaucrats decide and not the industry) and then the eu has to create a law and then pass it. and then they will have a yearlong deadline when the law actually will be implemented. thats it.

They didn't regulate some USB-C requirement. They just demanded the industry to settle for one single standard for all devices of their choosing. That's forcing the industry to self-regulate at worst.
      >They're the reason we have those moronic cookie popups
GDPR isn't just about cookies, it's about all data gathering/processing that isn't strictly necessary for some website/service to work. It's great, because now you can opt-out from Google/Facebook/etc. tracking you and selling your data. Or in fact, you have to *opt-in* to it, so you can just block the popups with an adblocker and if they still collect your data you can sue them.
