Are you implying they're going to make two different phones for each region with different ports? That's moronic. Apple has specifically gone out of the way to have as few regional versions as possible. If they have to use usb-c in the EU than it'll just apply to all iPhone. Now I'm expecting them to just straight up ignore this law and pay the fines to use lightning away.
I don't think they actually make much money selling lightning cables any more. You can buy chink cables in any gas station for just a dollar now. The macbooks use USB-C, it would make more sense to unify around that.
Chinese iPhones have dual sim support and Japanese ones have a different NFC system which the nips use for train tickets. Apple obviously can make regional changes.
And the rest of the world uses the exact same model of iPhone. That's not an accident. They did it to reduce costs. They'd need two different molds and assembly lines to make the hole different sizes in different regions. That's a massive waste of money.
>USA >doing anything right
lol
Europe forced their hands. Apple won't make two different variants it's a waste of money. Thank your morally superior euro bros and get back to work, slave wagie mutt.
It was only a matter of time, the iPad already has USB-C in Europe.
It's a great idea on paper but it's actually moronic. They needed fricking years to approve a law about dictating the use of USB-C, which is already getting pretty old.
Maybe the next standard will be introduced in a year... I just hope its inventor lives in the USA, because right now there's no way it would take off in Europe.
As of now, the only way to get "progress" is for something to acquire widespread market adoption in US, then wait a few years for euro lawmakers to write a law that replaces the current one.
Because of this law, Europe will always be lagging behind in terms of tech and progress.
If US does something similar, we'll be facing dictated technological stagnation, and we'll have to rely on fricking China or India.
Jesus Christ what a terrible prospect
All you need is for the big guys to come to an agreement that a new port is needed. Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi. Everyone else will just follow within a year.
Apple didn't agree to USB-C, they are being bullied into using it now.
EU kills innovation, the EU commission is a bunch of fricking morons. Why the frick are a bunch of old people deciding the digital age when they don't understand it.

ironically thats true because it wont be possible anymore to bring a new connector to the market without decade long legal battles with the empire which of course only the largest tech-monopolies are able to afford.

All they gotta do is add an expiration date to the requirement. The inertia required to switch back to something proprietary after expiration would be too high as customers would expect things to still work but eventually somebody would come up with a standard that is better and worth switching to and everybody would just switch.
Being forced to switch now would make them think twice about not going to the new standard later unless they had a really good reason not to because they would just get forced to switch again if they frick it up.
>All you need is for the big guys to come to an agreement that a new port is needed >all you need
which is surely and easy, efficient and fast thing to do. thats how innovations happen. the whole world has first to come to an agreemente because something can happen. also u will have to convince the eu. which takes years. and then eu will need years to pass a new law. also this gives even more power to big corporations and eu. power gets even more centralized. nobody besides the largest monopolies and the empire can innovate any more. this totally won't stand in the way of progress.
The real version is that the yank corps steal billions in investments or personal data, and then get fined millions by the EU, money which then immediately goes to a minister's niece to sponsor lesbian rodeo clowns in Poland or some other bullshit.
Why would they even decide on a new port when no one will use it. Pretty sure phones will be usb-c for at least another decade until someone decides to throw this out.
Apple will do iphone 14 with lightning, iphone 15 will have no ports and no charger
Only the lightning charger is older than USB-C. This law is not only for phone chargers. It's required for all electronic devices to have USB-C charging ports. Handheld devices by 2024 and laptops 2026, thus the recently returned and updated magsafe is going byebye.
>laptops
I wonder if manufacturers will make EU specific versions or just choose to go worldwide with USB C. Is the amount of power needed for a high spec laptop even possible with C?
so does this mean Apple is obligated to have a port as a smartphone manufacturer or can they completely ditch ports all together in favor for wireless (aka going all in on the magsafe ecosystem)?
>Apple have been gradually moving to USB C for the last 3 years >some Macbooks and iPads already used USB C instead of lightning
EU didn't do much, it's completely inline with Apples roadmap.
>roadmap
they never had a roadmap until the eu announced they were forcing everyone to adopt to usb-c. don't pretend to be fricking moronic and think this was apple's idea, you dense frick. they were completely against the idea, and even claimed that adopting usb-c would create more waste. this saga has been going on for years and itoddler attempts at revisionist history have failed. my god itoddlers are brain damaged fricking idiots.
Requiring phones to have a charger port is moronic. I've used exclusively magsafe wireless for two years. Without the dumb port phones could be waterproofed and made much more durable since the PCB doesn't need to extend through the case.
>used wireless sometimes just because >turbo heated my phone and damaged the battery
It's a terribly flawed tech and I'm not looking forward to the day when they get rid of ports. People will be replacing their batteries once a year because of that excess heat.
>Without the dumb port phones could be waterproofed and made much more durable
Waterproof USB-C ports have existed as long as USB-C itself has. Idiots made the same argument with headphone jacks when those have been made waterproof before they were on cellphones.
As for durability, noone has given a single shit about durability since phone manufacturers decided to start sandwiching their devices between two pieces of glass because it feels more "premium"
>Without the dumb port phones could be waterproofed
Nice zoomer argument. We already had waterproof phones that had all the ports (See Samsung S7 for example).
have a nice day.
The waterproofing meme was the reason they got rid of swappable batteries and that is way more useful than being waterproof.
Just put the fricking phone down when you're in the shower, Stacy.
They could make it possible to debug it via the sim card slot. I assume apples still have them. Like some android phones have sdcard slots that are sharing pins with the sim2 card slot.
>They could make it possible to debug it via the sim card slot.
This is an absolute hassle so everyone will hate it and it also requires major redesign in terms of internal phone infrastructure.

>Replacing lightning with USB C is much easier
Some guy did that mod himself, it was literally just "drill a bigger hole in the case, and solder on the connector with bent pins to match the pads on the PCB.
All Apple need to do is add that bigger hole to their CNC, and make circuit boards with the pads spaced out appropriately. It's not even like they need to add a USB3 controller, nobody is transferring data over the cable nowadays anyway so USB2 is fine. They can just leave the extra pins detached.

no anon. innovation is still totally possible.
its just that from now on the whole industry has to come together to decide on a new standard and then they have to convince the eu which is totally not a big deal (even tho eu still can say no since now a bunch of bureaucrats decide and not the industry) and then the eu has to create a law and then pass it. and then they will have a yearlong deadline when the law actually will be implemented. thats it.
>Catering all the progress into one port instead of having segmented progress in every single type of port is holding back progress
are you moronic or are you a troll ?
What bottlenecks? USB-C can charge up to 240watts with 48V at 4Amps right now. Just by the nature of how phones work and how small their batteries are, in the foreseeable future there's no reason why anyone would need anything more.
EU din't force any particular port. They are the industry to pick one and stick with it for all devices. If USB-C ever becomes outdated they are free to choose a new port.
It is because they know they'll have to buy more... Dongles. You know, like how anyone gets an iPhone in current year without having an existing lightning charger feels. Tim Apple was a mistake.
hmm... i seem to remember a large chunk of the apple community proclaiming that buying dongles was fine, and that everyone who complained about it was just a bunch of whiners
My gayman laptop can actually charge over USB-C, but it can only do 130w so it can't run the 3060 full tilt without it's 300w power brick plugged in
I believe future USB-C specs will push that to 250w
>Why does the EU have such a hard-on for regulating everything.
They didn't regulate some USB-C requirement. They just demanded the industry to settle for one single standard for all devices of their choosing. That's forcing the industry to self-regulate at worst. >They're the reason we have those moronic cookie popups
GDPR isn't just about cookies, it's about all data gathering/processing that isn't strictly necessary for some website/service to work. It's great, because now you can opt-out from Google/Facebook/etc. tracking you and selling your data. Or in fact, you have to *opt-in* to it, so you can just block the popups with an adblocker and if they still collect your data you can sue them.
>forced to adopt USB-C >being sued for restricting NFC >the fight for third-party app stores is coming
I never thought I would see the Apple walled garden collapse this hard. I hope the next move is to force phone manufacturers to allow users to unlock bootloaders and load their own signing keys just like secure boot in every other computer. This kills the "you will own nothing" israelite.
We can only pray something similar or better gets passed in US, Apple fanboy pushback will be crazy tho
Are you implying they're going to make two different phones for each region with different ports? That's moronic. You may be right but I'd think they would've already relented and switched if that was the case.
