I work as a MLOps and I can tell you that even corporations (Korean SMEs actually) can't afford fricking RTX 4090 (x2 or x4) let alone H100. The price has risen up crazy.
Seriously frick their artificially limited VRAM. They can expand VRAM (like 160GB for RTX X090) without any hassle but they've set the limit just to sell their H100 and upcoming H200 series.
Don't they have specific GPUs for data centers? I understand why they limit their VRAM, for gamers you don't need much more than 16 GB even for 4k resolution and VRAMs cost a lot

because a GPU has far more cores than a CPU, Nvidia cards have specially designed tensor Cores that are efficient at matrix multiplication
CPUs execute 1 instruction 1 datum at a time, now with multiple cores the execute N different instructions with N different data, where N is the number of cores.
GPUs execute 1 instruction M data, where M is the number of cores of the GPU.
So while CPUs are faster in a per instruction basis, GPUs can execute the same instruction to more data in total in the same amount of time.
So when you need to execute the function multiple times to a lot of data, GPUs are better.
They are called GPUs because originally they were used for graphics, because for graphics you need to do the same calculations for every pixel in the screen, now there are other problems that can be solved with GPUs, so they went up in price because the demand increased from just gamers and a few specialized computers for specialized problems, to general use computing.
