It's not true but it makes the starting point better.
Learning Latin has helped me write but only because it teaches autistic-level grammar out of necessity so I know what and when to use a plupper.
The way to get better at writing is the same way you get better at any other serious discipline, just devote hours to the craft more days than not.
it's not a moronic take you dumbass, you HAVE to read a lot if you want to be a writer, reading is what creates your prose and writing structure
it's like being a cook
you can't become a cook if you don't eat good food and study its recipes
True, teaches you the standard by which to measure yourself from, imo it kind increases your base stats as a writer, if you've read classic lit you instantly start off as better writer since you have a higher quality conception of what literature is.
It's true. Then you have to read a truly great work 10 times.
Don't fear the nerd who knows 1000 books, fear the crazy frick that did read the same book 1000 times
You laugh but that has been the advice of every great writer. They all fricked off and read a greater writer exclusively and then started writing for real.
You will never know if you are writting something good if you don't even know what is good or bad.
You will probably end up writing some embarassingly autistic or shallow story without even realizing it.
imagine trying to get good at something without having a foundation of the forefathers which preceded you.
Writing a lot is the most important part but imagine just writing without reading, learning new vocabulary, seeing how to structure a sentence better etc.
Most good modern series or movies I see are based or take inspiration from literary classics.
So I don't need to read the classics if I'm based?
It's not so much "must", if you like reading then you'd be doing it anyway, if you don't and you just want to write then you'd just be writing. If you don't understand how reading improves writing then idk what to tell you.
to be a good X player you dont have to watch any professionals playing.
To become a good writer, you must think like a good writer. You must eat what a good writer eats. You must breathe what a good writer breathes. You must live where a good writer lives. Then, and only then, will you yourself be a good writer.
What do good writers read?
What do good writers eat?
Where do good writers live?
>when morality is subjective, all things are permissible
They read other writers.
They eat other writers.
They live among other writers.
Do you expect to be able to paint without studying painters?
As a composer I would say 60% of making music is just listening to other music critically.
Its definitely made a noticeably positive impact on my own writing so I fully reccomend doing it. And besides, if you don't like reading, why write?
>to become a good rapist, you must first be raped a lot
Raping isn't an art, moron.
speak for yourself
