I'd believe this. My dad hung around the Bandidos for a bit in the 70s (wasn't a member though) and I've met a few of these guys. I'm fairly good at talking to people, and because my dad knew some of these guys too, I'm pretty good at getting them to relax and open up a bit with me. I believe the collective order that these groups provide is very powerful. They care a lot about respect, they have to watch each other's backs, and you have to prove yourself to the others. Imagine blasting down the highway in a pack of 20 of these guys where you're inches away from the guy in front of you -- you have to be totally focused the entire time with no room for error. You ride as a unit and imagine successfully accomplishing that with a bunch of these guys when you're from some shithole town in Texas and you never knew your dad because he went to prison.
Obviously the appeal is enormous.
I don't think "lack of jobs" is really the problem, it's more like the type of jobs I think. Some left-wing historians have said de-industrialization contributed to the rise of gangs because the nature of industrial jobs provided a similar sense of male comradery where men are working as a unit around a bunch of heavy machinery and watching each other's backs, and de-industrialization left a void that the gangs filled. Better too if you're unionized and there's an emergent, structured social order within the union.
