Television. Displays RF (coax) composite (yellow wire), S-Video (looks similar to a PS/2 plug, or component (multiple RCA or BNC plugs) at 480i30 or 240p60 depending on the signal. Has larger dot pitch (bigger "subpixels"). There are some that can do HD resolutions on component but these are uncommon and usually 35"+ sets. Basically all are limited to 60 Hz.

Computer monitor. Displays high resolutions up to nearly 4K using a VGA plug. Has much smaller dot pitch (smaller "subpixels"). These regularly go up to 120 Hz refresh rate for a flicker-free experience.

Zoomer CRTphobes take note before you post your gibberish. These are not the same. Also, both of those are new enough that they have a thick layer of leaded glass bonded to the front of the tube, so they don't expose you to any more radiation than eating a couple more bananas a year does. Also, only the 480i/240p TV ones make that distinctive 15 kHz whine that you always accuse us of being too old to hear when we tell you about how our computer monitors don't have an audible whine. It comes from the horizontal refresh rate, which is 15 kHz in NTSC. Even a basic b***h 640x480 60 Hz VGA signal has a horizontal refresh rate of 30 kHz which isn't audible, and it's much higher for better resolutions and refresh rates.

    I wish.
DB/Z is the most popular anime ever and it will never be released in proper HD because Toei are a bunch of israelites who refuse to release Blurays of 16mm Film Anime

Plenty of other popular classics that will never get that treatment such as my all-time favorite Kodomo no Omocha(recently got an SD Bluray set which was just the old terrible DVDs which used shitty broadcast tape masters) which was very popular in Japan back in the 90s.
Same with 1999 Hunter x Hunter see pic related.

So many great shows will never get the rescan treatment.

Well with shaders at 8K and higher you can easily emulate a CRT.
But this doesn't solve the problem. It's not a resolution issue so much as the master used just sucking balls as you can see in that HxH comparison. It looks extremely dim compared to the original Cel.

There are many old DVD releases which still hold up but there are even more DVD releases which just look horrible no matter if you're using CRT or not.

The Funi rip you're using doesn't have the first opening song and it keeps muting whenever a variation of "19'o Clock News" plays.

Which reminds me that I was editing those subs floating around(mostly for second season)... mostly fixing grammar typos but sometimes also mistranslations sometimes using the french fansubs as reference and sometimes by ear with my limited Japanese knowledge etc. but I stopped at Episode 99.
I gotta finish them and upload them to Nyaa or something at some point though I have no experience with uploading torrent or how that shit goes.

I was hoping that somebody would have uploaded the new version from Discotek Media already so we could rip the subs from that(though so far they've only released the first season) but nobody has done it thus far.
The only negative I can think of with the Discotek version is that they edited the logo from the Japanese version(based on the trailer to "Kodocha" and it looks awful but we could at least rip the subs.

The JP SD Bluray hasn't been ripped by anybody yet. Those should have at least better compression thanks to modern codecs which wouldn't be a huge upgrade but still it's something.

You don't, the monitor does. You make a 2560x240 resolution, it still displays as 4:3 is the geometry is right, then you just need to scale the content to the resolution.

How much does cable type and quality actually matter for analog 15khz video?
I've got the same CRT as OP and finally decided to make some decent cables for the damn thing as the pre-made ones are all for 80's home computers. Do I need some special 75ohm RGB cables or can I just use any regular coax cable meant for RCA audio stuff? I got a whole lot of Tasker C118.

shielded single core cable if it's longer than 1,5m

As long as it's shielded and 75 Ohm, it will be fine.

        >75 Ohm
What difference does cable impedance actually make in analog video?

          Anonymous

Not as big of a deal if all the impedances for each signal are matched, but otherwise you could have wrong saturation or mismatched saturation, etc. Other issues include ringing or ghosting from signal bouncing back, etc.
It's still a voltage and there's a drop over distance but it's also already low RF levels, so RF related issues appear too. Usually 50 to 75 ohm is recommended. Monitors usually terminate too, so it's not a huge issue.

Nah, I tried a while back to set up a win98 VM but it just did not want to work with QEMU.
But this monitor doesn't need DAS at all. It's in a remarkably good condition, geometry, convergency and color are all almost spot-on. Even the insides are really clean.
I really want to know the hours tho. Seems like a lightly used unit. Monitor of this age and this condition is a great find either way.

Yea agreed with the other anon, this isn't worth $50.
Just to set expectations, getting a decent CRT requires patience, if there's nothing available now, just wait and check again frequently. Good CRT listings do not stay up for long.

      I like my eyes.

CRTs are legit better for your eyes in video games. Motion looks and feels like ass on LCDs due to sample&hold blur, it's actually a singificant source of headachy-fatique in my experience. Eyes really don't like it when they're forced to stare at an unfocusable picture for hours and hours.
And of course a CRT at sufficiently high refresh rate (85hz) doesn't visibly flicker so there's no strain disadvantage to begin with.

buy it from a reputable brand like extron at least, most VGA cables are garbage

I own a bunch of those generic blue-black cables just like in that picture, they perform just as well as much more expensive ones, even at like 350mhz.
I even got a male-male adapter piece that lets me plug the adapter directly to the CRT, still no differences!

        Anonymous

        >the adapter
Also I tested against a native RAMDAC too, nothing. Delock 62967 and some generic VGA cable is peak analog video quality, apparently.

Good but I'd stick to a good panel for modern games. CRTs shine the most for older content.

      >Any crts that support 1080p and maybe higher refresh rates?
You can easily have 1920x1440 at 85Hz or 1024x768 at 144Hz, technically you could also interlace to have both at the same time but image quality suffers, specially in motion, even when some blind morons will claim otherwise.

      >How are modern games on crt?
On a high-end CRT, mesmerizing. Especially for lower refrsh rate games, you can't replace a CRT, the motion clarity difference is too big.
Picture quality is also very hard to come close to if you can be bothered to set up an optimal viewing environment.

          Not him, but

Generally speaking, no. The only benefit is the swag factor from it's "holy grail" status.
          >how much would I have to pay for a high end crt?
Difficult to say. For example, I paid 200zł (46$) for my Nokia 445xpro125 which is an excellent monitor. But in muttland such a monitor would cost much more I imagine.
          >any recommendations?
Almost any 20" and above monitor. Smaller high-end monitors existed but they're generally more rare. Any 17" monitor except for those high-end ones will be bad or average. A 19" one will be good, a middle ground between 17" and 20" or higher.

          >how much would I have to pay for a high end crt?
I paid 250€ for this F520, Americans would say that's a steal. This is the absolute best aperture grille ever manufactured, so it carries a premium. Almost-as-good 20-inch CRTs can be had for fraction of that price, if you're lucky and patient enough.

It's not as good as the F520 at raw specs and performance, but it is wide. Depends what you value more. Or what you can find first. These monitors aren't too easy to get.

Okay show me how you can consistently find cheap F520's.
            >Apparently it's isn't even in good order.
It's got just 10k hours, phosphor uniformity, brightness, the tube is basically new buut it has that ghosting issue very common to F520's. I bought the monitor knowing it had that fault. It's usually easily fixable by reseating the video board, and that did work in my case too - for a few hours. It's super persistent in my case.
I believe a permanent fix for this would be to replace the internal contacts, but finding something suitable has proven to be difficult.

I flip a lot of hardware, including CRT. Lighthearted "looking for" ad's plus also good bots to scan local sales listings and grab them the instant they pop up are a sure way to find gold. In the last 2-3 years I've flipped seeral F520 and never even paid half of that. Have fun.

You're telling me you got a steady supply of F520's for less than a 100$ every single time in the last 3 years at the height of CRT euphoria? This would be more believable 15 years ago.

A few F520's, not like it's been a truckload, pretty sure one was even free but I'd have to check my records. Usually the Sonys I encounter are just G and E models, I don't usually bother with smaller E/G's though, just big ones.
Really not that hard, I run across a couple high end CRTs a month usually, being located in one of the more densely populated western places on this round rock though.

That's exactly what I have done. I still get a notify about every single listed CRT, higher end models are just sparse here. You see them once couple months on average.
I've seen several FW900's tho but all in poor condition with ridiculous prices.

is there any software similar to das for mitsubishi monitors, i have a rebadged 2070sb and it could use some polishing in software, its gamma is too low to be usable

No, but it has something better, an on-screen service menu. Read your service manual.
Does it suffer from black crush, can you not increase the brightness enough to make blacks gray? You need to increase G2 for that.
If that's not the issue you may need to invest in a colorimeter. CRTs are expected to run at little whacky gammas natively.

    Pros/cons of shadow mask/apperture grille/slot mask?

      Anonymous

I have all three types, and when they're properly calibrated you'd be hard pressed to tell any difference. Now, the main difference isnt in the tube type and yes in the electronics/engineering behind it. If you have a shitty low-end budget monitor on a shadow mask, it's gonna look worse VS a good Trinitron (99% of them are good tbh), specially if we're talking about 17" displays.
Things get very interesting with high-end displays however, according to many early 2000s forum posts, where CRTs absolutely peaked, it seem the general opinion is that: "Shadow masks are better for text, AGs are better for graphics/color work".
Nowadays, you'd pretty happy with any high-end tube, be it SM or AG.

Also, let me add that advantages do exist for AG and Slot Mask. In my experience they're less prone to moire patterns and whites are "cleaner" compared to shadow masks.

at what hertz used crt? if ~60, then it is understandable. at 120+ Hz CRTs are even more harmless than LCD, flickering is absolutely harmless and imperceptible at this frequency, the phosphor glow spectrum is more natural and natural than the glow of LED backlight

Even depends, 15kHz CRTs have slower phosphors to reduce flicker for example.

      >Not only has the radiation exposure from CRT monitors been shown to damage and mutate brain tissue, but it has been shown to cause potential damage to the reproductive system, as well. Both these ill effects could create life altering damage and impact.

.It was later found that TV sets from all manufacturers were also emitting radiation. This caused television industry representatives to be brought before a U.S. congressional committee, which later proposed a federal radiation regulation bill, which became the 1968 Radiation Control for Health and Safety Act. It was recommended to TV set owners to always be at a distance of at least 6 feet from the screen of the TV set, and to avoid "prolonged exposure" at the sides, rear or underneath a TV set. It was discovered that most of the radiation was directed downwards. Owners were also told to not modify their set's internals to avoid exposure to radiation.

    Also:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathode-ray_tube#Ionizing_radiation

CRTs can emit a small amount of X-ray radiation; this is a result of the electron beam's bombardment of the shadow mask/aperture grille and phosphors, which produces bremsstrahlung (braking radiation) as the high-energy electrons are decelerated. The amount of radiation escaping the front of the monitor is widely considered not to be harmful. The Food and Drug Administration regulations in 21 CFR 1020.10 are used to strictly limit, for instance, television receivers to 0.5 milliroentgens per hour at a distance of 5 cm (2 in) from any external surface; since 2007, most CRTs have emissions that fall well below this limit.[552] Note that the roentgen is an outdated unit and does not account for dose absorption. The conversion rate is about .877 roentgen per rem.[553] Assuming that the viewer absorbed the entire dose (which is unlikely), and that they watched TV for 2 hours a day, a .5 milliroentgen hourly dose would increase the viewers yearly dose by 320 millirem. For comparison, the average background radiation in the United States is 310 millirem a year. Negative effects of chronic radiation are not generally noticeable until doses over 20,000 millirem.[554]

      cont.

The density of the x-rays that would be generated by a CRT is low because the raster scan of a typical CRT distributes the energy of the electron beam across the entire screen. Voltages above 15,000 volts are enough to generate "soft" x-rays. However, since CRTs may stay on for several hours at a time, the amount of x-rays generated by the CRT may become significant, hence the importance of using materials to shield against x-rays, such as the thick leaded glass and barium-strontium glass used in CRTs.[190]

Concerns about x-rays emitted by CRTs began in 1967 when it was found that TV sets made by General Electric were emitting "X-radiation in excess of desirable levels". It was later found that TV sets from all manufacturers were also emitting radiation. Headlines about "radioactive" TV sets continued until the end of the 1960s. There once was a proposal by two New York congressmen that would have forced TV set manufacturers to "go into homes to test all of the nation's 15 million color sets and to install radiation devices in them". The FDA eventually began regulating radiation emissions from all electronic products in the US.[555]
