Saved my ass a few times when other keys stop working properly. I use cursor keys a lot. Good for calculators, too, even though I don't use those very much these days.
Also, for those who remember, there are fun ALT+code sequences. Some even survive IQfy post-pruning. let's see if a few of these survive:

Frick. A bunch of these do really fricky things with the browser ibnterface now. Hadn't played wit them for a year or so. Disappointing.
i do cad and use it all the time
actually it's most of what i use on the keyboard when doing cad
believe it or not lots of things people use comptuers for involve entering numbers
I just wish they would put a Tab key on it. Maybe they could replace the /, *, - and + keys with a Tab and maybe some more advanced spreadsheet navigation keys.
But more importantly, when is Excel going to fix their scrolling? I want to scroll based on a certain number of pixels, not for it to always be three cells even when those cells are full of half of a page of text.
numpad is exceptionally useful for tasks like adding check totals, 0.01-isking in EvE Online, and remotely controlling thrusters and torque appliers in gmod.
Zoomers are obsessed with removing things they don't deem as necessary.
It's weirdly upsetting to them to the point they'll pay more to not have something included.
Not quite sure why this is.
>Why does it exist?
Entering more than a few numbers. It's especially nice because you can touchtype on it efficiently with one hand, leaving the other hand free to mark your place in a column of numbers you're entering. >Who benefits?
People with jobs.
>vimtroony with no numpad wants to enter number >has to use both hands AND move them around
lol? The only purpose of the alphanumeric numbers is when you enter a single digit number, or for shortcuts. Otherwise you use the numpad.
It's a standardized programmable macropad that comes with most keyboards for free. Numpad keycodes are distinct from the rest: this means that every application can distinguish numpad keypresses and they can be safely used to bind actions to them. This applies to both the additional navigation cluster AND the number keys, meaning that you have DOUBLE the number of programmable keys that appear at first glance.
It also happens to be useful for fast numeric insertion, but that's a minor benefit in the grand scheme of things.
The space saved by smaller keyboards is nice and all, but ultimately not worth it in my opinion. If you really insist, get a TKL/75% plus a standalone numpad: you retain every key, but you also gain more flexibility in where to put it on your desk. But getting rid of it altogether is just worse in every way, layers are not an adequate solution since they make some key combinations impractical or impossible.
The only disadvantage is needing an additional USB port, but it's insignificant on a typical desktop PC nowadays, you can always use a hub if it ends up being an actual problem.
Millennials remove it and then compensate with QMK or some shit, which they wouldn't have needed in the first place if they just kept a keyboard with all the keys present on the standard IBM PC compatible keyboard.
I find it really bizarre that those who remove the numpad tend to be self-professed "keyboard-oriented" people. They don't actually know how to utilize a computer keyboard effectively and intentionally gimp the functionality of the very tool they worship.
On the other hand, I think numpads on laptop keyboards are silly and should not be built-in. They permanently move your typing position off-center, you're better off with a standalone numpad on a laptop if you happen to need it. But on desktops, you don't have this problem, since you can just move the keyboard itself.
The only problem with the numpad is the location, which predates the widespread adoption of the mouse on desktop computers and favors right handed people.
In and of itself, the numpad is useful. Ideally, it should be detachable and not built in, though.
you can get standalone keypads
and of course keyboard without them, so you can right now do like your picture

Bluetooth means batteries, more money to replace once they die, or having to recharge every so often which is a massive inconvenience, same issue with wireless mouse, it's already sat on the desk 24/7, just plug it in. Nobody is taking this thing outside with them and using it with a laptop, guaranteed, nobody is that sad

Get a bluetooth one. I use this one on my laptops (Mac and PC) for Blender and the Creative suite. $20 and the battery lasts forever.
I use it daily. Don't like the keys? Don't get a keyboard with them.

Some standalone numpads come with an additional tab key.

This. I need my left hand to rest my head.

If you have a keyboard layout where numbers of the top row are accessed with shift, it’s often faster to use the numpad.
Hell, even if you just want to enter a long-ish string of digits like a credit card number, the numpad is faster.
why do people get upset at it?
