Basically the reason China are investing so heavily in fabs. They don't trust western equipment, and I can't blame them for that if you look at what's happening to Russia.
China has a law saying that government computers must be domestic silicon and domestic OS (a Linux distro) by 2024, and they're basically there already. Chinese desktop CPUs are about equal to AMD laptop CPUs in performance, so for an office computer that's going to be plenty, and for the army it'll be a huge upgrade from all the 80s computers they're still using.

Sure, but Vietnam and Mongolia don't have that. The chinks only push it on their own people.

Also China tends to score pretty well in "how democratic do you feel your country is" polls, so even if they do not get to own houses clearly that's something they feel like they chose.

If by "good" you mean the possibility to drug ourselves, indulge endlessly in consooming food and toys, sure.
But we don't see that as good. We see it as very unhealthy.

In China you have to support the state and you can't criticize it. But this is a lot less insidious than what we have to do here, we have to pretend to support violent murders and rapists, which we have to share spaces with every day, perverted child molesters as well, which we always have to pretend to like, pretend that they are doing good work, and can never criticize. We are told every day that we are evil, should feel bad, should just castrate ourselves and die out.

In China everyone knows it's a dictatorship more or less, but a dictatorship has to respond to the populations will as well as the truth. In the west we live under a system of fake democracy, where most votes know it's pretty much useless but a lot of people pretend that it's democratic, and people are continuously baited into useless controlled resistance in the fake democratic system.

Anyway, when it comes to who spies on you, China is by far the best option for us.

      Anonymous

That's not how it worked. China never had the Zen architecture itself, all they did is to have AMD add some Chinese crypto algorithms and GloFo manufacture the chips. The only thing that Hygon did was to package the CPUs, slap "Made in China" on them and sell it domestically. There was no transfer of IP, Hygon can't replicate the CPUs.

      Anonymous

AMD sold the designs to Zen1 to a subsidiary of itself that it created to sell domestically in China. They only have a variation of Zen1, and its lower performance, significantly in some regards, to our familiar Zen1 SKUs.
Lemote has nothing to do with this company, and this chip has nothing to do with Zen at all.

The Loongson CPUs are MIPS designs. They're long storied now, RMS famously uses a laptop utilizing one of their processors. Back in the day just before AMD's Brazos and Llano APUs had real market penetration, these Loongson chips were outperforming intel Atoms in a bunch of workload, having great FPU performance.

God even the smart chinks are moronic. Windows doesn't run on this shit, so for end users it's completely useless. Linux is going to need years until support for another meme ISA is mature enough for some use, but running a server with instable software is going to be shit. Using docker or full growns vms to run software that's not native to your ISA is going to terribly inefficient. If they'd used arm the resulting product had some proper use, hell even risc-v would have made more sense.
