webp (lossless) consistently outperforms png and jpeg xl (lossless) consistently outperforms both and I use it for storage, when I want to post something on IQfy, I post jpeg because frick you Black person.
I'd argue that AVIF is better if AV1 gets widespread adoption everywhere on the internet. It would solve one of the biggest problems on the internet: screenshots.
Instead of using PNG (bloat) you could losslessly mux an AV1 keyframe into an AVIF file. You get to keep the 50-100 KB file size while maintaining lossless quality at the same time.
No one cares about your "extract image from video" problem but you. AVIF is not suitable for lossless images.
Then we are doomed to butcher the quality of screenshots with bullshit image formats like jpeg-xl because most websites don't give a frick about lossless, they just want to save bandwidth. Most of the PNGs you see online have reduced colors.
