What sort of sci-fi is it? I'm not much of a sci-fi guy, but on occasion it can be good. I just don't like it when it's got that shonen or Hollywood action film feel to it.
The amount of philosophical ideas pertaining consciousness, computer science, physics and math it throws in. It doesn't get any harder than Egan. Look up the famous Dust Theory.
Egan is a passionate amateur mathematician. Some of his books come with technical supplements to explain the low-level physical counterfactual that he builds the story on top of. Permutation City isn't one of those books but this should help you understand what sort of writer he is.
Permutation City is basically about (computer) simulations and about modal realism. Through its story it works out a couple of ideas about these subjects and demonstrates them. If you think these things are trippy and interesting and like a certain (non-total) amount of rigor then you can have a great time with it.
Some people talk about it as a tremendous original intellectual contribution. They're overstating it but if it hits people just right it can have that effect on them.
Attached is a related short story of his that I like very much.
There's no shonen element.
IQfy has low IQ as so they can't appreciate Greg Egan kino books, try your luck on IQfy where real smart people dwell here, not this unironically midwit board IQfy
IQfy is literally the most moronic board on this site—endless posturing from a bunch of halfwits circle jerking about race and IQ, and neither of which they understand.
To be fair you need to have a very high IQ to understand Greg Egan (unironically)

How can you be sure? I've found, often, I cannot tell crests from troughs, and what appears a crest in a certain light is trough-like enough in another. I've seen a ship sail shore to shore troughs the whole way. I've seen another ship crest-eternal stay quite still. On the page, the numbers add up, but in the static of the civilized, dots flip dashes and confuse the message.
>try your luck on IQfy where real smart people dwell
lol
I hope for your sake that you've never actually looked at IQfy, because if you have and still think anyone intelligent posts on that board you may actually be moronic.
>try your luck on IQfy where real smart people dwell here
i hope this is ironic right ? this sub needs a maths and physics general , i bet they'd be better than the IQfy ones
/mg/ is incredibly boring these days, mostly just undergrads asking for help on their homework
a IQfy version of /mg/ where we talk about actual historical mathematical texts, as well as both the history and metaphysics of mathematics, has the potential to be based

As much as i like the idea i don't think you will have a broad enough audience on here to sustain something like that. It would be really niche.

IQfy by long margin is the most pseudo midwit board around, lots of IQfyzen thinking that they are smart for reading some obscure french depraved, telltale sign of midwitism, IQfy unironically actually discuss hard topic like computer science and physics.

Really thought provoking sci fi with accurate mathematics and physics while having an engaging story.
Fantastic book. Maybe the most accurate/relastic depiction of how uploaded copies of yourself would work.
What makes it thought provoking? What is the biggest brain sci-fi out there, anyway? I'm sure Egan is on the top shelf.

Yeah, I like it. I'll read him further. Thanks for sharing the excerpt and your perspective.

finally someone said it

There is already is a /math/ general on sci. Might come in handy when trying to read Egan.

Haven't seen one of those in a while.
its true im not smart enough to understand this book.
its like the movie primer for me. i need to read the wikipedia like im destiny to understand
I always wanted to get into Greg Egan but most of his books are just too insanely hard and complicated for me. Loved Quarantine though.
IQfy is too dumb for Egan. Better to ask IQfy even though that place isn't too much better.
