alright i'm working on an autistic worldbuilding project and i want some relatively obscure public domain works of literature that would be interesting to incorporate. as neat as they are i am tired of the majority of basic b***h public domain characters, Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Frankenstein and his Monster. (even though i'm using the final two).
here are the ones i have so far that are obscure (at least to normalgays)
>Fishhead, Irvin S. Cobb
>The Land That Time Forgot, Arthur Conan-Doyle
>The Wendigo, Algernon Blackwood.
>Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwood, William T. Cox.
>Gladiator, Philip Wylie
>Beyond Lies The Wug, Philip K. Dick
what are some other suggestions for obscure PD kinos to incorporate?
The Gormenghast Trilogy, John Silence, Melmoth the Wanderer, The Monk, Wieland, The Golem and McTeague
thanks for the suggestions
>The Gormenghast Trilogy
This is not in the public domain. OP wants public domain characters to steal from.
>The Land That Time Forgot, Arthur Conan-Doyle
Do you mean The Land That Time Forgot by Edgar Rice-Boroughs, or The Lost World by Arthur Conan-Doyle?
edgar rice boroughs, not the lost world. my bad.
i'm not using The Lost World
Why? They’re just dinosaurs. Can you please elaborate on your project.
it's primarily centered around public domain IQfy capeshit and certain IQfy pulp fiction characters
tldr: i'm writing the accounts of a WWII Era team of superheroes working on behalf of the U.S government and their exploits during and after the war. (and the pre-ww2 history of said superheroes, dating back to when Hugo Danner, the protagonist of Gladiator. was born)
this includes reports (for lack of any better term) of their missions from 1943 to the early sixties. them being sent off to deal with whatever supernatural or weird bullshit ol' Uncle Sam doesn't feel like dealing with themselves.
including, but not limited to
>being sent to Castle Dracula to kill the count before he allies with Germany and tries to rape England (again)
>preventing the Nazis from re-discovering whatever lost scientific principle Victor Frankenstein used to create the creature
etc.
i was planning to incorporate The Land That Time Forgot into one of these. but now that i think about it The Lost World would probably be more interesting to work with
>The Lost World would probably be more interesting to work with
I would love to see prof. Challenger make an appearance. I think he’s rather an underrated character.

All of Melville (Pierre, Confidence Man, Piazza Tales, Israel Potter, Poetry, etc.)
Maybe MP Shiel if you like him

Edgar Allan Poe Stories and Poems
Washington Irving Tales
Nathaniel Hawthorne Novels and Tales
Coming Race and Bulwer Lytton Novels/Tales
Swinburne's Poems and one novel
Marius the Epicurean
Alice 2 novels, Sylvie and Bruno, Carroll's Poetry
>Clark Ashton Smith Stories and Poems
Most of it is not in the public domain in the US.
It's so easy to navigate around that lol.
What do you mean?
What about HG Wells, he has some interesting characters/creatures. Also Zaroff from The Most Dangerous Game could be a good villain
Already done before.
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Silverlock
i'm fully aware of League, in fact. it's what inspired me to do this.
but my iteration of the same concept is different enough to be unique, i think.
mine is more focused on IQfy from the 1920s to the 60s with only a relatively small smattering of IQfy content.
Hypnerotomachia of Poliphili
gods of peganna, based op.
didnt read it ( >inb4 any comment about books being better than audiobooks shut up i know ) but listened to it on audiobook while cycling and was entranced
>what are some other suggestions for obscure PD kinos to incorporate?

>Gormenghast
>public domain
