I then tried to explain how russian culture might seem simple, obedient and conformist, but if you actually look past his subjective perception it's more complex than that. In a quiet corner of the library. It's not screaming to get read, not obtuse or highly political. It reads intimately - it doesn't bite like dostoyevsky or have quite the whimsy of chekhov - it's the only book I read by the author but I am very fond of it.
