Turns out that the 'automated' technology was actually 1000+ Indians monitoring everything you did, keeping track of what items you picked up.

If they were trainning AI they wouldn't be shutting down the service altogether but "improving" it.

Chinese ones are because they can't actually develop technology

Still the best automated system in use for billions of years.
Versatile, resilient and easily replaceable if you don't take ethical issues into account.

I read stories about this literally being the case like 6 years ago, and this is why they weren't expanding, it was mechanical turks all the way down.

    stop saying bs

the tech was just shitty. "According to The Information, 700 out of 1,000 Just Walk Out sales required human reviewers as of 2022." 30% success rate.

I knew a friend who did something similar for captcha style systems. He said almost all of these supposedly automated systems are just endless hordes of people working for pennies.

CAPTCHA solving websites have been a thing forever. from the "case studies" that those services sometimes make, the "workers" seem to be mostly east euros or balkan neets

    >Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped.

this was just a pilot monitoring scheme for something more sinister and the AI has enough data for training

You have to tap your CC on the turnstile before you are let in.

The Indian is supposed to watch you from the cameras, recognize what you picked up, and charge you for it. I would think that, by moving really fast and hiding what you pick up from the view of any camera, you could actually get in and out without being charged (or charged for the right items anyway).

the reason they failed is cuz all of the uses of Amazon fresh (myself included) can just use the app and order it to my house and a slave brings me the food for $5. i was across the street from one of these stores and i ordered it to my house cuz it was simpler and my time isnt worth $5 to walk around a store and i can get exactly what i want on the app and take as long as i want.
