The US has a pretty hateful relationship with railways. As it was in every country rail was a huge source of government industrial corruption. Also passenger rail is never possible, period. It's impossible to set up a passenger rail system and it be profitable. A rail company needs heavy freight to offset the losses from passenger rail. So literally every passenger rail company in the world is subsidized by taxes which is literally socialism, which is something Americans don't like.
