Someone on /wsg/ found a way to upload VP9 WebMs and it worked just as well on the site as the VP8 WebMs. The admins found out and updated the code to stop it.
To date they have put more active work in banning VP9 from the site than they ever have to support it.
The backend programmers on this site are paid shit and consequently the quality of the site code reflects it. Thumbnails are JPEG because one superstitious homosexual thought rendering PNG (with alpha) would somehow slag performance -- while every image is studiously scanned for hidden content and has EXIF data pruned from it. Every page duplicates content because they can't into responsive design.
It's had morons coding it since the beginning and if a given feature isn't an actual security issue they refuse to touch it.
This sounds about right.
Oh and another fun story: after moot left they thought it would be a great idea to have the image CDN running on SSD based Mac Minis. Not surprisingly within a few days the thrashing used up the write cycles on them and suddenly images wouldn't appear on the site.

GIFs and WebMs both have alpha transparency support, but only GIF transparency is supported here now while they've suppressed the latter.
That's just the usual incompetence from the IQfy dev team. Transparency will come back, but you'll never have VP9 or AV1.

For the millionth time, IQfy is not the only imageboard. However it IS the only one where WebM is supported, but not audio streams and VP9, because moot was a luddite who decided it shouldn't, and hiro doesn't care. Every other modern imageboard, including Futaba Channel which this site is a rip-off of, supports VP9, audio streams on WebM, as well as MP4 and WebP. None of them have been turned into TikTok by the zoomer boogeyman.
It's not even a matter of technical impossibility or cutting costs, either, because sites like 2ch.hk, Krautchan, Ylilauta, which rival(ed) major boards on this site in PPH, already supported video uploads way back in 2014, when the entirety of Gen Z was still shitting its diapers.
