Are 40% keyboards just a meme?
I'm seriously debating buying and building a mercutio 40%.

its for the basic user who inly uses social media and other stupid creative shit.
if you use office software, code, or you actually know a lot of keyboard shortcuts, then youre gonna need thr missing keys.
A good compromise is a tkl keyboard, its just the numpad chopped off.
I mean, you can use layers. I don't see why people do though, a few square inches of desk space is easier to come by than muscle memory in your fingers.
Midwit answer. Any vim master doesn't need anything other than 40%
60% & via
Rollovers & macros can speed stuff up
>I miss the numpad like you wouldn't believe.
This is the main issue I have with small keyboards. I don't really see any point in getting anything like a 60% or 70% because I use the numpad a lot and have space on my desk for the keyboard. I just wanted to know if a 40% would speed up typing or be more comfortable.
Function layers would be a good solution because I can just have the numpad be on the keyboard itself.
>its for the basic user who inly uses social media and other stupid creative shit.
This is one of my main issues. I write a lot of code and I'm worried that my productivity will suffer.
I absolutely hate ortholinear layouts. Can't deal with them.
Ironically enough I have a MMO mouse with tons of buttons. I don't play vidya that often but when I do, I use the mouse keys for switching weapons and such.
Only keys I actually need are already on the keyboard without the need for layers so my gaming won't suffer.
if they have more than 1 layout, and at this size they better have them, you should be able to config a num pad at the right side of the keyboard.
I meant more than 2(two) layouts.
I miss the numpad like you wouldn't believe.
40% are okay, but I think 50-55% are more versatile. Think Preonic, 5-row ortho splits, and so on. Unless you're jamming out F-keys and using a numpad frequently, I don't see the need for a larger board as a daily driver. I use an ortho split, and find both my productivity and comfort to be improved for it.
I honestly couldn't imagine doing that shit. I specifically bought a 70 strictly because I actually know how to use a keyboard, unlike most people, apparently. I doubt you could even use that thing for gaming due to a serious lack of actual keys. Unless you want to spend a good portion of your time finding a 12 key MMO mouse that you like, don't get that stupid crap.
I'm with an anne pro II (60%), and I config it to behave kind of like vim when pressing caps lock and it was a great improvement. I'm not sure about losing the number tho.
The problem I have with 60%s is that they're still big and annoying without the added benefit of having the numpad and other keys easily accessible. A 40% allows for less hand movement which
Yeah. The one I'm looking at (the mercutio) is compatible with QMK so this sort of stuff should be easy to set up.
The keyboard does look nice.
I use a 65% and I understand 60%s, but I don't understand how you could give up the number row. I "get" that decreasing hand movement is good but I don't see how putting numbers on a layer could possibly by faster for normal typing and programming than just putting them on a row above the letters. In absence of any explanation, 40% keyboards just seem like wankery to me. Am I wrong?
i've used full keyboards, 60% and 40%
forget the 40% it's a pain i got tired of it and went back to a full membrane kb
imho the best must be a 65% or tenkeyless but i haven't tried them yet
I'm specifically not a big fan of 60-80% keyboards. I have a full sized model M which I love, but a 40% would be more portable and just easier to deal with in certain situations.
It really does. It also seems interesting to build as it all comes in a kit and you have to solder all the stuff yourself.
My god you're a homosexual, I seriously doubt you ever go anywhere with that keyboard much less use it for anything other than shit posting
No bro it's not a meme, you can just type out numbers like eleven.
Tap dance you fricking cretin
Premonition checked, neat
KNEEL
Why would you want to put the f keys so far away? I use them all the time for shortcuts.
OP here, this is the keyboard I have now
Based
Sovl. Objectively it doesn't make that much sense but buckling springs are the best.
Absolutely agree.
Best feeling keyboard I've ever typed on.
WHERE THE FRICK IS THE QUESTION MARK
Nice statement. Where the frick is the question mark in that post?
>40%
this is the least problem of mechanical keyboards, some use 30% with plover and type over 200wpm with ease.
The true problem about mechanical keyboards is that:
they are to high.
the post-trabel is ridiculously long.
lack of Bluetooth support or ridiculous prices for prices that support it.
stabilizers are always shit
40%? its what ever, you set it up and roll with it eventually you find all keys or even start using keys that you never though about, QMK firmware is the best shit ever made for keyboards and any one not being able to flash their keyboard (no matter the size) with it is missing alot.
I never cracked numbers high than 70wpm so being fast typist was never a thing for me, if you are fast typer this keyboard with probably slow yo down.
