Audio is a solved technology, if your DAC and audio stack is good, i don't know what a physical EQ would offer over a software one.
The only perfect "hardware" equalizers are in fact software equalizers running on dedicated computers.
The electronic side is solved. Speakers and room acoustics are still very far from perfect.
i can see one case where i myself wanted hardware eq real badly. lets say you recording bass heavy instrument (like neck pickup on guitar) and you want more SNR on it, because bass is too damn powerful, signal clips too early in ADC. so what you could do is use eq hardware to roll off some of the bass, and crank more of that gain for bigger signal and potentially less noise
however when i was researching it, apparently not a lot of people share this idea. they fine with having just 24-bit audio interfaces that allow for bigger headroom to begin with
You don't need a full EQ for that, just a simple high pass filter.
yes, if you need more headroom, just record at 24bit (32bit is a thing as well, but 24 is enough for dam near anything)
you should be recording and mixing at 24bit+ anyway, because it's basically free to do, and gives you a boatload of headroom to change things however you like without needing to worry about the noise floor
