Even a misogynist like nabokov had to admit that there were good female writers.

Jane Austin, look up the list of his opinions on writers, he gave "nonentities" actual reviews while for Jane he just says "Great" because he despised the fact that there was a female writer that he actually respected. He also brings up Marx on a list of fiction writers just to shit talk him, bourgeoiscels stay seething.

          so just 1?

Your error is in thinking Nabokov sat down and composed a list. The "list" is cribbed from various passages in Nabokov's Strong Opinions, which is a collection of anything he wrote that can be categorized as nonfiction. There is no "list" that Nabokov composed.

All this essentialism is stupid. There are average-level mental differences between men and women, but there's no hard-and-fast dimorphism, and there are people who are substantially psychologically atypical for their sex.

Not an argument. If that statement is true, it's true no matter who's saying it, and if it's false, it's false no matter who's saying it. Or are you saying that coming out of a different mouth somehow has the ability to magically change the truth-value of a statement?

Don't count out women authors if you haven't read "The Wide Sargasso Sea" by Jean Rhys. I may be biased because I love the part of the world its set in, but I found it as solid as anything written by a man. I prefer Hemingway to Faulkner, re-read "Sometimes a Great Notion" and The Hobbit/LotR regularly, and grew up on Gary Paulsen in middle/elementary school, if that gives you anything insight into my tastes. It's short, too, you can read it in an afternoon.

Moshfegh is a thot, though, and yes, anything she writes should be hung on an outhouse nail.

    Nathalie Sarraute
    Irene Nemirovsky

These are THE best women writers I have read, and I've read quite a few literary women writers. Not only is Sarraute THE best woman writer I have read, but she is THE best writer I have ever read. I've yet to find someone that tops Sarraute. She's like a female Beckett in some sense, with the way she was reacting against the Balzacian novel.

I only read one of Irene Nemirovsky's works, well technically two, but the first one can be seen as an early draft of the second. However that work was so singular and well written, that I have no doubt her other works are of a similar or higher caliber. She was a very skilled modernist, but tragically her life was cut short by the Holocaust. I wonder what Nabokov thought of her. He surely would've moved in similar circles as her in Paris considering they were both Russian emigres.

The book isn't even bad. No, the prose isn't "good literature" but I feel like a bunch of antisocial neets should be able to find something to like about it given the central conceit.
