Makes me want to kill myself.
I don't know what true silence is.

I don't read, but when I do, music distracts me.

I couldn't read in silence even if I wanted to because I live in a balkan shithole and some monkeyman is bound to yell or make noise at all times of the day

When I'm in a public space I just put a Bill Evans album as a sound barrier.

Usually silence, but occasionally if the book has a setting that lends itself to it, I'll quietly put on some traditional/classical music of that setting/period.
Here's a business idea for someone. Book soundtracks synced to an e-reader that tracks your eyes and syncs the soundtrack with what you're reading.

Silence of course. Otherwise you're just distracting yourself from fully appreciating either the book or the music.

Silence, I wouldn't want my reading to be interrupted by music, with either music or reading I want to be able to given them them my attention as much as possible.

Need some low humming ambient noise (enterprise starship sfx 10 hours) to drown out various city noises.

    Silence.
I could never read, study or sleep with music in the background. Too easily distracted I guess.

    >Distractions
    >While reading
So are you reading or listening to music, tell me. Because if both, then none of them receive your full attention, which at that point what are you even doing.

If you live with other people you have to drown out the sound of whatever they're doing

Listening to Selected Ambient Works Volume II while I read The Bible

I have a few good books like "the decision book" that just present quick one-page ideas. I could picture reflecting on those and listening to whatever. For, any in-depth narrative, I prefer silence. But I can read in public with loud conversations no problem.

    >Are you reading in pure silence or put some ambient music on?
that's a silly question, obviously even without the music it won't be silent since i will be hearing the sound of my own voice as i read

    Tinnitus, homie. It's never silent.

I am reading in a room, much different from the one you are reading in now. I am recording the sound of my reading voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed.

The self-inflicted ringing in my ears is neverending so I can't read in total silence. I don't listen to music though, I don't really know what kind I would listen other than maybe some vaporwave stuff.

Might as well read aloud and improve your diction and speaking voice at the same time at that point, anon.

I recently thought it was pretty messed up that we didn't have reading hours at school. Students should fricking read for 2 hours every day in class, one reading aloud and the rest reading at the same pace. Not only would this provide how to draw entertainment from reading for the little fricks, but it would also teach them how to spell correctly
