Attention problems and literature

Is there any point in reading or writing if you have attention problems? i try to read but i find myself getting lost in the middle of the pages and not really understand what's going on, to which i have to go back and restart and the same thing happens again. When I try to write (like for example an essay for school) I feel empty headed and cant coherently string words together unless i use AI as the basis for it and rephrase. I really want to learn new things through books and gain important insight from it but I genuinely feel like a moron when I try

attention is a skill that can be trained. you probably fricked your attention span through years of internet and phone usage. you can get it back by training it. keep reading

        Start doing concentration meditation.

or, instead of the sissy training you recommend, he could just harvest his adhd to find books that are so good / relevant / etc that they trump his wandering attention and literally rape him into reading them
i mean isn't that the essence of literature?
        hear that op?

This. Put your phone away. Start with 20 mins at a time of undistracted reading in a room with no screens, then work your way slowly up to longer periods.

        >attention is a skill that can be trained.
        This

If you need to re-read the passage, keep doing it until you dont have to, I know its going to feel like you are going to be re-reading thinsg forever but trust me on this, after 3-8hrs of trying really hard. your brain actually learns.

I was exactly like you 2 years ago when i started reading the Iliad, it was so fricking difficult and i couldnt understand most of the sentences (im also an ESL)

Now i can read any text, any style and understand comprehensively.

I can give one advice that actually let me understand what i read (my natural state is similar to OP)
When you get stuck on some part and rereading shit again and again. Make sure to reread the full sentence even if you get stuck in the middle of it. Don't immediately go back to the beginning but force through to the end of it.
My issue was often due to subconsciously dividing the text "graphically" by the printed lines instead of by the sentence.

Cut down on internet, social media or anything with a 'short' format and avoid quick dopamine hits. If you manage to keep that up for a while, your attention span should improve. Stick with reading, even if you have to re-read shit. It's not about how fast you read.

reading is supposed to help with that

Thanks for the insight people, I guess Im just going to force myself to take some time off the internet soon, and use it for reading more. Ive spent so much of my time using social media to where I genuinely feel like a zombie.

I havent really read anything in full but I have two copies of these books that my step dad gave me during christmas (I am currently trying to read the odyssey)

just remember to see reading as recreation instead of work. you don't have to force yourself to keep reading a book if you aren't enjoying it

i went through a phase where i thought older meant good and enjoyable, but i found out i didn't actually like reading many of the >100-year-old stories i was picking out. i switched to science fiction and i finally liked reading

          >I am currently trying to read the odyssey
that's a bad idea. you'll burn yourself out. read YA fiction or middle/high school literature to train your eyes and attention span on something less demanding. try one of these
          >The Catcher in the Rye
          >The Old Man and the Sea
          >The Hobbit
          >anything by C. S. Lewis
          >Harry Potter

What they said. You don't want something tedious to start with that sets you up for failure from the get go. Go easy and read something on a topic you enjoy

If you are interested in older books, you can try Shakespeare's plays.

Yeah, duh, to solve your attention problems
    This is literally like asking,
    >hey in physically weak and have problems lifting heavy weights should I just avoid ever lifting any weight?

I had this exact problem. Start with an audiobook and listen to it during your free time. There are audiobooks on Youtube.
Another thing that helps is having a timer and reading for 30 minute chunks during the day. Also, stop using too much social media. Good luck.

these are all great advice, do not start with hard or old literature, try to pick something easier like ya and light novels if you are a weeb. Treat yourself as a literal moron and start reading 5 pages every day. Limit cheap dopamine and short content.

How else do you think you overcome 'attention problems'?

that's natural. reading is a skill. just keep at it and you'll understand more. it's not that hard and If you have to read a section multiple times so what? it's not a race where you want to read as many books as possible, you want to gain insight and learn things.
but if focusing on a book for, i don't know, an hour per day is too hard for you then poor you, stop being a weak b***h

OP, seriously, read something you enjoy, not shit thats "supposed to be good". the book that got me into reading was fight club. you the first step to paying attention to something is being interested. with the books ur reading its no wonder ur having the problems ur having

This may sound weird but, if you can, find someone to read aloud to. I often struggle to read on my own, but I've been reading aloud for someone else almost every day for a little over a year and have finished 16 books this way (Significantly more than I've ever read in a single year before)
