Apple always has to frick something up with their laptops. Without fail

Back in the early 2000s it was the fricking hinges breaking, then when they switched to intel they were fricking melting because jobs hated fans (same thing that fricked up the OG 128k mac), and then it was the various shiterations of keyboards, the fricking touchbar, and now the notch.
As far as frick ups go, the notch is the least bad.

Going back further, WallStreet and other PowerBooks had issues where the thermals inside would literally disconnect the monitor from the motherboard, and then reconnect when it cooled
The only one that didn't really have massive problems was the toilet seat iBook, and well, it looked like a fricking toilet seat. That said, it basically "invented" the way laptop wireless works now, by hiding the antenna loop in the display bezel. Previous shit was always some bullshit PCMCIA card with an antenna sticking out

The 2008-2012 Macbook Pros were basically perfect. Built like a tank, upgradable RAM and HDD, easily replaceable batteries (last model before they started gluing them in).
All the ports you could ever want including USB A, Ethernet, and Thunderbolt on the later models.
The last good computer Apple ever built.

Applel knows having 8GB isn't enough. All the Applel fanboys who aren't completely illiterate know having 8GB isn't enough. The only reason they all pretend 8GB is enough is so it'll look like buying the 16GB model is a decision and should be paid at a luxury price, rather than literal extortion that forces imbeciles to buy additional memory at 2010 prices.

      Anonymous

Just checked their store page, only 2 models out of 10 still have 8GB.
Looks like they're phasing it out

        Anonymous

No, the purpose of the 8GB models is to make their laptops appear as same price as competitors on comparison websites, then once you are interested in it you'll choose the 16GB version and pay a lot more.
This is the same reason why iPads recently still had ridiculously minuscule 32GB storage, and same reason why they don't have a microsd slot, so you once you are interested you end up paying a huge extra to have a 128GB version instead.

The lack of IO on modern laptops is appalling and apple are the main ones to blame for this cancerous trend. Just 3 usb-cs on a """professional""" machine is NOT acceptable. It's completely absurd that if you want decent IO these days you have to go with a gaymer laptop which usually have shit tier build quality.
I could barely find a decent laptop with 3 USB-As, USB-C and an eth port.

      Anonymous

      >and an eth port
There's your problem. Why the frick would you need this on a laptop? If you only need a port every once in a blue moon, an adapter is the way to go. USB A isn't one of those ports, despite Apple's insistence, but Ethernet definitely is.

Just curious, why do you need that level of internet speed? Clearly you aren't going to play competitive vidya on a macbook (or any vidya at all). Is it job-related? What kind of job requires you to download-upload such gigantic amounts of data in record time on a home laptop?
          Genuinely asking.

            Anonymous

Sometimes I would need to transfer very large files over my home network and I would rather do it faster than slower.
Sometimes the wifi might frick up and I'd rather have a backup option.
Sometimes I would need to have a stable wired connection for whatever reason. There are many scenarios.
I simply prefer my tech to be versatile and give me more power to do shit than take it away from me.

            Anonymous

            >Sometimes the wifi might frick up
This 100% stopped happening to me like a decade ago, I assumed modern routers weren't as vulnerable in terms of frickups but maybe I'm just lucky.

Regarding speed itself, I regularly send 30+gb freshly rendered high bitrate videos to my other PCs and my company's FTP from my macbook.
I'm currently connected through wifi and I'm struggling to picture a scenario where I'd actually need more than what I'm getting in terms of speed.
I mean I only gain like 50-100 extra mbps (at the very best) from my eth-connected desktop and the difference is fairly negligible when it comes to upload/download times

            Anonymous

Yeah, why would anyone need more than 120MB/s for sending 30+ GB video files... No-one needs more than 1Gb ethernet, 10Gb ethernet is just silly!

            Anonymous

this but unironically, if you really need the 10gbps ethernet so bad you can buy a dongle or use a proper desktop workstation. 99% of laptop users never send 30gb files back and forth multiple times a day

            Anonymous

            >I'm struggling to picture a scenario where I'd actually need more than what I'm getting in terms of speed
Please understand there is more to "download speed" when comparing network quality between wifi and ethernet. Even partially saturating a wifi connection can incur higher packet latency, and worse, packet loss.

I understand some modern routers have QoS rules you can configure, but that would still require you to configure this yourself (and most people don't touch them).

zenbooks with linux are honestly superior:
      - better display (no notch, minimum bezels regardless, OLED with touchscreen if you want a touchscreen, 3.5k res at minimum, 90hz max with DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR YOUR REFRESH RATE, ofc 16:10)
-12 hours of battery life with 2024 generation
-good specs that don't break the bank (e.g. 16 cores, 512GB NVME, 16GB RAM with Arc GPU for £1000)

unified memory is moronic, it does not make anything more efficient, if anything it means your gpu has 1-6gb of ram and your cpu has 2-7gb of ram at a minimum.

if anything it means you need 24 or 32 gigs instead of 16 (not really unless you need gpu power)

Lenovo is the nu-Xiaomi of laptops. Plastic chink shit made using leftover parts from the production of better devices, loaded with CCP spyware at the BIOS level, running an unoptimized OS with even more bloat on top, and all for the price of an actually good device from a better company.

My Dell Latitude is quite nice as far as laptops go, actually.

They're literally the definition of everything wrong in the world.

32 gigs should be minimum in such priced laptops. Paying 200$ to upgrade from 8 to 16 costs like 6x more than for upgradable laptops.

If those storage prices weren't such ridiculous fricking bullshit, I would actually buy one of these and throw Asahi on it.

But there ain't no fricking way I'm paying that much money for storage. I'm hoping another global pandemic leads to a shortage of AIDs medication so Apple can get a new CEO that isn't such a fricking greedy ghoul.

Only Apple can do this cause it’s custom hardware and software
On battery the best laptop and the m3 max MacBook Pro is faster than the full spec Intel Mac Pro
There’s good desktop replacement windows laptops but don’t expect anything great on battery

My Yoga X1 would be perfect if not for the horrible <3hr battery life.

P53 is tempting. Good hardware specs, but how's the build quality?

    >tech bros gasp and say its going to financially kill them
    >rest of the world copies apple 6-9 months later
    >tech bros accept their fate and admit its not that bad
    >rinse and repeat the last decade
deal with it nerds, we're all living in a apple universe and I think nothing short of china producing some next level thing is going to change it

I listened to some dumb frick on YouTube a few years ago who said "always buy the base Apple laptop" when spruiking the m1 air, he said it would be more than enough ram because reasons. 8gb is not enough to run outlook, excel and PowerPoint at the same time. Frick YouTube

I have an m1 14" macbook pro from work and it's probably the best laptop I've had.

Performance is good enough, cooling seems to be great (I almost never notice it getting warm or fans spinning). Screen, keyboard and trackpad are all good. Ports are just about adequate. Portable, good battery life, feels sturdy.

I'm not that attached to macos but the whole balance of features is good, and I don't encounter any notable pain points. I wouldn't spend my own money on one though, especially because of the lack of upgradeability
