I'm convinced long books are considered better simply because the read spent more time with it. A tight 250 pages novel will not have the same impact as the same 200 page novel but with extra 250 pages of filler shit.

I think his point is that, when you start by reading what you like, the natural curiosity of people will eventually lead you to exploring more dense, complicated work.
It happened with me. I read a bunch of "classics" like Camus, Sartre, Flaubert and didnt like them. I found Mario Vargas Llosa, and immediately connected with his work. Once I had read alot of MVLL, I was curious about work similiar, and started reading the authors who influenced him (like, for example, Camus, etc.) It gave me a newfound curiosity, and then, it was a pleasure to read Camus. (I know Camus isn't really an example of dense, complicated literature, but you get my point.)
