you can get micro to mini adapters, though you do have to consider what sd standard the device supports, something that old may not like big cards

you can boot from an sd card, i couldn't say what your particular issue was, could be many things, such as;
- you didn't write the image to the card properly
- the machine isn't configured to boot from usb
- the image used is inappropriate for your machine (ex. bios vs. uefi, 32bit vs. 64bit)
- your bios/uefi doesn't recognise your card reader (especially multi-format ones may not be supported)
