>work in mortgage industry
>times are slow and i am about to be laid off
>I try to apply for anything finance related and apply for probably 100+ jobs and cannot even get an interview despite having work experience

what the frick am I supposed to do? I expect to get laid off within the next month or two. Should I just go back to school and learn a new skill? I was mortgage underwriter but its too niche of career and mortgage industry is literally dead right now. and all other finance related jobs are extremely hard to get it seems.

    everything is fricked
i have 1.5 years of experience at a legit AI company, great internships, a masters in AI/ML from stanford, cant find shit (only been applying to remote though because my wife got funding to go to grad school from her company)
Now that I'm moving to Boston im hoping to find something in person in the boston area.
Just had a kid, got laid off when she was 4 months preggers which really sucked
luckly my family has money and my mom is dead and my dad is 82 so I'll survive.
Still the world is fake and ghey, this economy will crash and burn

btw, always check those LGBT and racial boxes.... it helps getting an interview, you may get lucky with an HR phone screen then the actual team you'd be hired into to that interviews you doesnt give a frick and is just happy HR somehow sent them a white man.

I probably will get 2 or 3 months severance package and then 6 months of unemployment. unemployment benefits are shit but they will basically cover my monthly rent.

so I am not exactly struggling but it feels utterly hopeless because I won't be bringing in more income and will just be draining away my savings. not like my savings matter because I can't even afford a decent house where I live on a 80-100k year salary. frick this economy.

I want to have a stable career but its shit in the field I am in now. That is why I really want to move to something else to avoid stress of constantly being laid off and needing to look for new job.

        i feel you anon
i originally wanted to get into manufacturing, in high school i genuinely loved that kindof shit.
like how its made, i actually made robots, and made some cool shit with innovative manufacturing.

sick mom / old dad who needed help running the family business stopped me from taking a job at Tesla like 8 years ago.
        I would've been made if i just went there. but i couldn't
        so it goes.
This economy is fricked and no any manufacturing job in the US is a joke and no way to get one without experience.

my stanford degree that I pivoted to is seemingly worthless.
I can't even imagine what its like coming out of a sub top 10 school with below a 3.9 GPA
though my experience is likely tainted due to only applying to remote jobs, i do recgonize how brutal it is right now

the only thing to consider about this is from what ive read they would absolutely work you like a dog at tesla, whether thats worth it is up to you. I worked at a startup making composite military armor, I was there from like 7-7 every day in a windowless factory, I often didnt see the sun. After a year of that shit I was one of very few people who knew how to operate almost all of the equipment at the plant, they gave me like a 50 cent raise getting me up to 16 dollars an hour (FRICKING CANADIAN DOLLARS). Frick that shit Im so glad i left, went back to food service for a while and didnt miss it at all. I have since found a better job but if I hadnt I would be fine continuing in food svc over going back to that shit hole hellscape.

If anyone ever questions your sexuality, tell them it's fluid
If anyone ever questions your race, tell them you're 1/16th minority and entitled to reparations

Is an HR department chock full of DEI indoctrinated women really going to risk a hypothetical lawsuit over proving you wrong?

yeah, its actually insane. I wouldn've been better off accecpting my offer at a big 4 consulting company after my internship there and not going to stanford. Wild cause every "mentor" at the consulting company said yeah go to stanford you'll do better.
and yes the job reports are all cooked. unemployment is low but the number that actually indicates economic health the U6, is at ATH.

regarding the LGBT diversity questions, nothing will happen if you get "caught" note the wording, its all how you identify.
look at these DEI ideologues, they state that gender and identity can be fluid, so by all means, identify as what benefits you most at any given moment.

From what I've been reading, finance is actually one of the jobs that are in demand right now. Far more than marketing positions by multiples.
Maybe it's the area or industries you're applying to. Could be there's lots of nepotism.
I was looking at job boards last month and pretty much every major company I was looking at in entertainment (Universal music group, Warner Entertainment, Sony Music, Activision-Blizzard, EA, etc) and they all had finance positions open for all levels.
Try looking at different industries you wouldn't expect.

youre 100% right banking is cyclical and its likely going to get worse, though small chance that it gets better if manufacturing comes back, interest rages get lowered, quantitive easing to print out of debt would help banking. Idk if it will happen, only TPTB do.

        Was the masters worth it?
        >BS in CS and still can’t find a job after 2 years
        >from a UC and not ivy
Or do I get another bachelors at a different career? Ex: finance
I fell for the CS meme

masters maybe worth it at this point in time because the market is so bad that you would be being "productive" for two years building a resume while the economy hopefully recovers. but I think AI is killing the comp sci market first.
if your family has money to support you go for a masters, if not, unironically hit up a trade.
I would get into a trade if I didn't have so much time spent on this career path.
If i don't get a job in another 9 months im going to go into the trades.
I like working with my hands

Worth getting a masters out of the country? Ex: Spain?
It’s not the best CS program per se but I can afford most of it, also it’ll help me get out of my parents house and everything is more affordable there so I won’t be doomer (I live in CA with you too Stanford anon).
I just went out of an interview for an SWE position that was easy as frick. But just before me some giga Asian looking dude was escorted out so I’m prob not getting the job lol. Frick do I gotta move to Spain because I’ve been trying to find a job for 2 years and being a NEET no money gambling and currently losing a lot of money on shitcoins is demoralizing tbh

no don't get a masters in Spain,
only worth getting one at a top school outside of the USA.
            Honestly consider a PhD.
it would tie you over with benefits and income and cheap housing till this recession is over or SHTF if its going to.

So a PhD in Spain or something? I'm trying to get citizenship from legal residence outside the US so in case shit hits the fan I can move anywhere across countries without worrying about overstaying my visas.

Any recommendations for good MS or PhD programs for CS? Esp not too expensive. I am just a normie UC grad so not sure how to make it.

            Anonymous

Oh if your motivation is a legal residence then that changes things. A foreign PhD would be superior to a foreign masters. But you'd be better off with an American PhD.
If SHTF for real you'd be better off fricking of to the 3rd world asian contries like Thailand

            > I am just a normie UC grad so not sure how to make it
youre not a normie, but i feel you on the normal school thing, my undergrad was from an average state school. World of difference.

To get into a good program in the USA just identify differently for your race and sexual preference.
If you are above a 3.85 GPA that'll get you 90% of places.
Apply to PhD programs at decent schools in good areas for SHTF. You'll make it
also gamble on shot coins responsibly.
Google markowitz portfolio theory, learn it.
            Then learn stochastic processes.

        This is it.

I worked as a server for 7 years and upsold old rich people for years.

It played into my career because now I can convince people to do just about anything by talking to them.

I got a bit more clever since then because now even before I perform interviews I make sure I have something in common and bring it up in interviews. I try to be a likeable person and ensure that I'm not easy to forget.

On top of that I also recently had a kid, and you bet your ass I'm going to put that kid in my profile picture so that if they even think about slashing me they'll be looking at that poor kid while they do it.

I wish I got into healthcare but I don't want to deal with boomers or female coworkers. job security and high pay is good. I made 100-120k during covid as underwriter for bank and now i am down to 80k a year and about to lose my job. banking/lending is too cyclical .

lol, i have applied to +1500 jobs
i didn't count but some days I sent out +50 apps and have been unemployed for 50 years.
        what do you do?
how long has it been since you applied to a job?
you have no idea whether i'm competent to be an ML researcher (hint I am) but i've been applying to entry roles, anything, SWE, ML OPs, Devops, LLM work,
The real issue is lack of experience when there are so many with 3-5+ years who have been laid off.
        you sound disconnected.
I know many kids from stanford struggling to find a job out west even, this is unheard of in the past decade in tech.
back in 2021 i had 5 good job offers in 3 months of looking for higher pay than anything im applying to now.
in 2022 i got a job offer from JP morgan and the AI company I chose over them within a month.

for context, i have a degree from a noname canadian university, worked at a very popular bay area company for 4y, got laid off in jan, got 10-20 interviews after 80 applications in the next 3 months and got 1 FANG offer and 1 non-FANG startup offer in 2 months. granted, i'm not an ML researcher but i did my undergrad thesis in ML and i know the way these fields work/having networked my way up from the bottom in canada with zero internships in 2019 and just a ton of networking/trial and error

in the last 2 months alone i did like 5-6 onsites after 80 app, landed 2 offers and have never dropped an algo/dsa round, fricked around in japan for 2 weeks and didn't think more of it. if you're truly a good researcher it shouldn't be that hard to get a few interviews unless your work exp isn't recognizable/people don't care enough

my guess is 1) your YOE is simply too low 2) looking for remote only 3) boston and 4) ai/ml leaning towards mid level experience/the new grad market being fricked right now 5) skill issue 6) masters in stanford ai/ml is cap because they only offer online degrees

            Anonymous

in general it also just sounds like AI/ML is a dead field unless you're a mid level/senior+ and actually produce research/not are in an applied-only role, so you sort of answered your own question btw.

That's precisely why I pivoted my area of expertise to be more desirable to employers because the area I was in previously was getting super saturated.

LLMs aren't hard to work with and RAG is pretty basic shit so you're basically setting yourself up to be replaced just like a lot of frontend-only devs are finding the job market for that role is super saturated now

yeah the difference between you and I is you are on the west coast and can work in person. I've been limited to remote because of my wife.
Also you have 4 years, i have 1.5.
Huge differences. If i had 4 years I could've landed many remote jobs I've applied to easily. I've been told its the only reason i wasn't getting a role 3 times.
I've had 6 final round interviews that all went great.
I only found out that we are moving to boston 2 weeks ago. I should get something quick now that I can apply to in person

            > masters in stanford ai/ml is cap because they only offer online degrees

Also it's expensive as frick but atleast I can apply ot internships again if I'm back at school during my masters / phd right.
