China's New hard drive technology

Compared to HDD:
>It uses 90% less power
>3x more data density

Its already being sold and used in Chinese servers so this isn't something western media can deny. I can't wait to get my hand on one of these for storage

Huawei’s new magneto-electrical disk (MED) technology, known as OceanStor Arctic, is indeed a significant advancement in storage technology. It promises to use 90% less power and offers 3x more data density compared to traditional hard disk drives (HDDs). This technology is designed for archival storage and is expected to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) by 20% compared to tape storage solutions. The first generation of MED will have a rack capacity of more than 10 petabytes and power consumption of less than 2 kilowatts. It’s slated for international release in the first half of 20251.

The development of MED technology is part of a broader trend towards more energy-efficient and high-capacity storage solutions, which is crucial given the ever-increasing amount of data generated daily. This innovation could have a significant impact on data centers and the storage industry as a whole, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective way to handle large volumes of data2.

More a successor to tape drives than to hard drives?

If speed is your concern you should just use ssd. hdd will not provide the speed that ssd has nor will it be have the capacity that china's new drive will have. hdd will be the jack of all trade, master of none after this.

        Anonymous

Conventional hard drives are still very usable in a NAS (especially when you add an SSD cache)
Yeah SSD's are great but still too expensive for larger storage with redundancy.

This "archival" disk might be 10 or 100 times slower than a conventional hard drive.
That is still OK for backups but not for normal use.

I wish I could take China seriously in terms of tech advances as the underdogs of the modern day axis but I keep remembering how much crap technology has been churned out of China masquerading as advancements over the years. At least Germany had a good reputation as an educated and industrious people even back in the 1940s, China just does not seem to have that and get weird with this ego and face problem they have and the need to show off their mega city skylines like they're trying to create a faux high tech fortune cookie new york when everywhere else in the countryside outside of the tier 1, tier 2 cities that I see on Weibo, Douyin, WeChat, etc. looks like a fricking shithole slum with borderline moronic poor people. I just want China to be something more than flaunting crazy technological accomplishments that just turn out to be too good to be true or flat out lies, just showcase actual accomplishments and not bullshit marketing slop like what OP posted. Is that so much to ask? It just makes them look more stupid than I think a lot of good Chinese are.

      >even back in 1940s
German language was lingua franca in Europe for centuries prior to the 19th century or the 20th century. It was the dominant country to produce arts, sciences, philosophy, math, religious works, etc. Your comment makes no sense in that regard, when you say you're surprised Germany had good reputation in 1940s. The WW2 had germans pumping out advanced technology at breakneck speed. Our rocket system came out of that. German physicists worked with Americans to create the nuclear age.
