    >Even euros are ahead in sodium these days
Wouldn't be surprised if the US just goes full "We don't need that. Oil, frick yeah!". Tesla won't be switching from lithium, unless forced to, anyway.

Every year new revolutionary battery technologies are created, and we are yet to see one used for real...

You can buy sodium-ion batteries right now.
Since sodium is heavier than Lithium, these weigh more for the same capacity, but not needing super rare materials and lower cost are the big advantages here and works well for stationary usecases like home power storage for solar, soaking off-peak power, etc.

Looks like it's worth it just for the safety and those max charge cycles are insane.

Why visit IQfy when you got no clue what's going on around you? Sodium-ion, not to be confused with molten salt, is already here and we're just seeing the race of who will be the go to manufacturer.
      >inb4 i'm actually that dumb of a Black person
It's a type of battery that sits close, but beyond lithium-ion, doesn't need rare earthes like cobalt and just blows up instead of turning into literal greek fire, aka an OSHA wet dream.

You can already buy sodium batteries. The problem is that they cost three times more than lithium batteries, have two to three times less capacity at the same size, and their voltage is unstable while discharging. Prices will likely fall, but capacity is pretty much at the maximum we can get from sodium batteries.

Will never beat lithium, but I suppose we need an alternative to lithium since we're destroying the world's reserves with dumb shit like EVs and smartphones

can sodium be extracted from ocean water ? so you get sodium and drinking water ? why has nobody implemented this ?

      Anonymous

Of course you can extract sodium from ocean water, desalination plants that remove the salt to produce drinking water have been a thing for decades in some places, and redirecting the left over salt would be trivial. That said, desalinization is quite energy intensive, so it only makes sense in certain coastal areas that are really short on rainfall; I would wager other salt source would make more sense to get the sodium needed for these batteries.

Remember how China owned the patents on LFP batteries? When everybody said "NMC batteries are bad" because they contained cobalt, which is dirty and hard to mine, and were prone to fires? Then China came out with LFP batteries, which is now replacing NMCs in all cars. Less fires, faster charging, more range. Even after the Chinese patents expired, no western companies are mass producing them because China is still able to mass produce them cheaply + hold the rights to all the mines.

Sodium will be less fire prone, due to chemistry and architecture. They would likely be used for mass energy storage for solar+wind rather than for cars, however.
