Christianity lists seven deadly sins that will lead the human soul to damnation:
>pride
>greed
>wrath
>envy
>lust
>gluttony
>sloth
But how come it never occurred to anyone to add shame to the list, when it's arguably the worst on of them all as it ties into each and every one of the other sins and encourages the sinner to follow down a further path of self destruction.
/his/
The bible is a philosophy book therefore this discussion belongs on IQfy
wrong and wrong
Not an argument
nothing you mentioned is in the bible anon, this is not IQfy
Well it's been mentioned in christian doctrin. And Christianity is arguably a philosophy so it counts as IQfy. Hard to call it history when a lot of it is centered around mythology and religious faith
>And Christianity is arguably a philosophy so it counts as IQfy.
>Philosophical discussion can go on either IQfy or IQfy, but those discussions of philosophy that take place on IQfy should be based around specific philosophical works
>Hard to call it history
& humanities
I don't see you whining in every philosophy thread.
Stop playing "backseat mod" if you're going to be so obviously biased in your "backseat modding", loser.
Pride = Shame
As i mentioned in the Op, all the sins=shame. Therefore shame should be on the list as it's essentially the sin that ties all the other ones together
I believe pride is the cause of shame but shame cannot be the cause of pride basically and thus it would fall under pride.
>But how come it never occurred to anyone to add shame to the list, when it's arguably the worst on of them all as it ties into each and every one of the other sins and encourages the sinner to follow down a further path of self destruction.
you must be a roastie, or at least a woman (probably past 25); I would also bet you are fat and you shoplift even though you have enough money
that is true, although if we discount any physiological disturbance of the brain, all sins come from pride (with the possible exception of sloth); another theory I head is that greed comes from pride, and all other sins from greed
TPBP
what about gay?
That would imply a choice expressed out of free will
and does it a sin? I once gayed with a brother
I'm not particularly religious but if it falls under the category of lust then yes, that would be a sin. Incest is questionable on many levels also not just from a religious standpoint
You fricked your brother?
wtf gross
Nah he meant he bedded down a man of the African persuasion. I mean it’s his life.
So he was blacked? He should’ve said that instead of “gayed with a brother” lmao
Gay is a lifestyle choice and is literally called Pride now. Just because you feel attraction to someone or something doesn't mean you have to center your whole life around having sex with it.
Pride
Shame is useful for social control and is used by Christianity itself all the time for this purpose.
Evil can disguise itself under many masks, even the Christians one. This is pretty obvious to anyone these days. Whether good grow, evil will try to spread it's salt to hinder it's growth
>Christianity lists seven deadly sins
No, it does not.
All sins are deadly and your "seven deadly sins" comes from pop-culture (man's tradition), not Scripture.
>But how come it never occurred to anyone to
It never occurred to you to actually read the Bible. So shut the hell up, liar.
You literally go around "cancelling" and shaming people for referring to crossdressing men as "he". Every one of your SJW attacks against Christianity is a projection.
The concept of the 7 deadly sins was put together by the catholic church around the 500s, so saying it originates from pop culture is completely uninformed
>muh papist boylover cult said
You're subhuman for caring about the Vat-of-sin.
It's thanks to the vatican Church that we even have christianity today. So if you consider yourself to be a christian you shpuld at least appreciate Catholicism for what it has done for Christians even if you heavily disagree with it
>thanks to
God
>don't (you) mean?
Okay sure if you want to split hairs. But the catholic church is responsible for spreading the gospel throughout the known world. The fact that they became decadent and corrupt like all institutions of power later on is another matter altogether
>splitting hairs
A basic statement of one's belief is 'splitting hairs'? All the decay, all the corruption of modern times is borne in such a statement. Change your life.
sounds like you are one of those ass-hurt orthodox who worships gypsies
>corruption
you are not corrupt, you are the corruption
>sounds like
Deny the assertion. Oh, wait a minute, (you) can't --short of denying your religion.
it was the pop culture of its time if we are to be honest :3
the Vatican may be limping, especially since Vatican II (World War II, Vatican II, makes you think) but at least it's resistant to trends, compared to protestant churches, and not just an arm of the national state, as orthodox churches
In eastern orthodoxy despair is sometimes listed as the eight deadly sin. I'd say that it just falls under sloth, even if it's a more justified version of it.
What do you mean by "shame"? Could you explain?
It's an act that is a result of guilt and lack of self worth. It's the antithesis of remorse, which is a holy virtue, because it lacks regret and self acceptance both of which are key in the path of healing and taking a closer step to God (Love). I don't really have a clear definition to be honest. I'm just stating what i feel it is off of the top of my head
It's a shame, perhaps, but shame, as such, is not a sin. (Shame is what you may feel when you commit a certain type of sin -- say, cheat on your wife.)
Damn nation with its sins! En vie, c'est trés difficile, maintendrai le sainté. I need a stunt for PR, Ides of March as the preffered time. I think I'll hang reed around the house to ward off the sin ghosts. Aw, rat! Here comes the Medievalposting again. I'll read some St. Luke for clearance of mind, abbreviated, degreed, and nicknamed, he's also called Lu., St. Gee, Lu.? T- Tony, whaddaya doin'? Slo-, thee sin demon!
These jokes are terrible, for shame!
>pride is not the opposite of shame, but it’s source
All Semitic religions glorify shame; pious believers are those who shed tears, smash their heads, and cry out for God's mercy. This dark, masochistic frenzy is absent in the Aryan religions.
>shame
suffering
yet all non-Abrahamic religions take pride in shitting in the middle of the street
how curious, don't you think?
>all life if suffering...
>... so annoying people while also shitting out babies non-stop is totally okay
Shame indulged actively is Pride. Unless of course what (you) really mean is Sorrow. I'm certain that you're able to discern that 'shame' relates exclusively to oneself, whereas sorrow relates to the one wronged. Compare 'I'm so ashamed' to 'I'm sorry'
Actually that's kind of a fair point. Shame comes from the ego, which is what essentially leads to pride when it's not kept in balance.
Wasn't trying to solve anything, anon. Just thought it might lead to an interesting discussion. Trying to think of ways 'shame' makes itself explicit other than simply owning up, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Shame is not a fundamental bad, it is a necessary mechanism of any healthy society. While there is no healthy and positive version of sloth or pride, for example.
Pride is difficult, because so often it attaches itself to health, from healthy body to (otherwise) healthy thinking. Only envy is more difficult to discern perhaps for its very omnipresence. Anger and Sloth are both discouraged, the former moreso *these* days, the latter, strangely, less so. Lust is now regarded as a matter of course; greed is every Western person's best kept secret. Pride also has many positive connotations affixed to it, so the bad from the good is hard to tell, or if that's even a sustainable (actual) difference. Strange days these
There are in fact many Orthodox books, particularly Greek, that actually praise shame and regard it as the main difference between East and West in terms of mental health and self-help psychology (and its failing thereof).
The main argument being that egotistical thought dominates the West and causes depression ("I'm not treated/loved/cherished the way I think I should be, therefore I am sad") and the way they erroneously combat this is by further inflating one's ego with shallow gratifying thoughts ("You deserve the best. Love yourself more. You are perfect the way you are"), which bloat you up to come back down and then hit the ground even harder when nothing actually changes and no one loves you more for being even fuller of yourself (and then need more therapy, probably convenient if you're a therapist).
So the real antidote they see would actually be thinking very little of yourself and concerning yourself more with work (idle hands so on) and helping others in more need to focus on their problems instead (probably also developing some gratitude for your own better condition etc). They do raise some points from time to time about despair being bad but far from being a deal breaker since the main thing is having faith, I guess.
Notice I said Greek because that's the vast majority of what I happened to read but there was also a few Russian works which I completely disregarded because Russians view Orthodoxy as an updated way to promote Bolshevism to their cattle slave population so that when they're sent to die pointlessly they don't ever get any second thoughts. It's genetic so there's not much use in taking any of it seriously since they only distort it to feet whatever need they currently have and isn't really that applicable if you're white.
Shame is pride's cloak
Pride is shame's cloak, rather. But it doesn't have to be.
