color screen e-ink system

there is now e-readers for .pdf which have a color screen, altough not cheap

>$219.99 - 7 incher

its only a reader, not a tablet or laptop with full blown OS

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/kobo-adds-color-to-its-e-reader-lineup-for-the-first-time-starting-at-149/

Kobo, a leading e-reader company, is set to release its first color e-readers on April 30. These devices feature colorful screens, waterproofing, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth, USB-C, and an adjustable frontlight. The Clara has a 6-inch screen, while the Libra boasts a 7-inch display and supports the Kobo Stylus. Both utilize E Ink's Kaleido 3 technology, offering

>4,096 colors and improved resolution.

For comparison normal laptop screens often have 16 million color palette.

Kobo's competitive pricing undercuts other color e-readers, which typically start at $300. The company is also updating its black-and-white Clara model, now called Clara BW, with a faster processor at a lower price of $129.99.

I never understood the point of e-ink. Why cant you just read on a normal screen or (even better) a paper book instead?

Single purpose device with no distraction and easy readable in any light.
Can pirate, can change settings (like font, disable hyphenation, line spacing), same base weight when bringing several books on a trip and hate how paper feel.

I guess that those are just not for me. I have recently started reading paper books again after a pretty long pause.

Reduced eye strain. Reduced power consumption. And they look very nice

A good quality screen won't incur eye strain

Maybe not, but looking into a light source is likely to be more straining than an ambiently-lit screen.

E-ink looks nicer if you're reading text.

            Bullshit, I hate epubs
Page count is skewed if you zoom the font, text reflow puts images wherever the frick it wants, monospace/code blocks all over the place, impossible to read tech manuals
I got an 8'' forma and just read pdf like the publisher intended.
            Frick epubs

I think that digitalized books like that can serve as a great backup but I prefer paper versions tbh. A physical book just hits different.

Have you read on e-ink? I'm asking because I was that way too before I tested one out for a while. Now paper books seem tedious even though it does feel more "real"

It looks as good as reading normal book (in some situations even better) and it doesn't suck like regular screens. You should try one, then you'd immediately understand. And as for why no paper books, e-readers are handy (lighter, can be more compact), you can carry around more books comfortably and most importantly you can get all the e-books online whereas regular book availability isn't as good. My local library is very well stocked but obviously loses to online libraries.

Eye strain and it's nice to pirate books or even the newspaper. Also less wheigth in your bag.
I still use the Kindle 4 released sometimes in the stone age. Regular tablet is superior for text books, magazines and other pdf docs.

No surprise. You can customize the display of the content and improve readability. Typesetter has to do this for a physical book and if it's bad, it'll be a strain to read.

The customizability is great. Great book is a great book, but sometimes the text is weird size or font and sometimes I have these books, I don't know what it is but my eyes constantly jump lines. It's really irritating. With ebooks I can just force it to a style, size etc I like. Great for people with poor eyesight too, you can just supersize the text.

Extremely low power consumption, none at all from the screen itself when the image isn't changing. This gives portable devices a much longer battey life.
You can also still see the screen when it's in direct sunlight. So e-ink displays are very useful if you're someone who actually goes outside.
Also they can do more than just books, it's just that thats what they've been most popularly used for since they were only black and white before, but now it seems that problem is going to be solved.

black and white and also very slow to refresh. i remember when they took like 5 odd seconds to refresh, reading a book is about all you'd want to do on one of them, but they were still very popular, because they beat lcd's at that game in so many other ways, every other way in fact

have you seen one before? in real life?
the key point is that eink is competing with paper, not lcd's, you use them where you would otherwise use a book, it's like a magic piece of paper that is programmable, but more literal than just any regular display, it works just like paper

      as for why not a book, well that is an option, but there are some advantages of an ereader over books, such as;
      - size, an ereader is smaller than even one book, yet it can hold your entire library
      - convenience, you don't have to decide ahead of time which book(s) you want to bring with you
      - cost, real books cost money
      - choice, not everything you may want to read is available in book form

Lifespan is good. Originally the battery lasts for months so once it starts going, you'll still have plenty of room there. It's funny, it's the one device where there's very little reason to upgrade ever. The only thing I'd want in my device is USB-C, but since I charge it monthly, it is not worth it to upgrade

nope because its still a e-ink screen

what causes eye strain is backlighting technology in laptops and typical tablet screens and mobile phones

lightning is LED mostly and is very bright
