What role does a CEO even do, like Elon Musk? How do they help their companies? They seem so high up that their abilities are limited to staff changes, deciding which products, and maybe changing corporate cultures
Choosing good top-level staff is a pretty tough decision. Other than that, he can overrule any decision made by anyone lower than him.
His role is leeching off the company. All the work he did was in the initial stages. That's the justification - that the CEO has to work very hard at the beginning to make their company recognizable and obtain first few customers, as well as throw money at the company (this one especially). So by that logic since it was hard then and the owner made it, it is now only just according to them to then relax and reap the rewards

basically yeah. also, changing things can get sticky, because if a company is publicly traded then some decisions that a ceo will make for a business that affects the running of it, or returns to shareholders, will still need to be approved by the shareholders with a vote. privately run and owned you will have to answer to a board of directors, which has similar powers as the shareholders. they can put in place or remove a ceo because the board is about trying to protect the business, its profitability and most importantly its entire existence. boards and shareholders can remove ceos but it's a last resort thing.
