Post Peter the Great, basically the entire cadre of Russian nobility was imported German nobility. The House of Romanov died with Grand Duchess Anna Petrovna, Peter III's mother, because even his father was a German. And then Catherine the Great cosplayed as Russian, as did all of her descendants and successors. The name 'Romanov' was only upheld for establishing legitimacy when its true heirs had already all died off.
Alexander I and his younger brother Nicholas I were 7/8ths German, and then Nicholas' son Alexander II was 15/16ths German, and then his son, Alexander III, was 31/32nds German!
And even then, Nicholas II's mother was a half-German half Danish (with more German on that side) woman, so he too was virtually completely German ethnically and ancestrally speaking. It is a wonder why they kept speaking French as their prestige language though after the enormous status and prestige hit France took following the Franco-Prussian War.

Formally, the French language could have been abandoned even during the Great French Revolution (the godless French killed their rightful king), especially after the War of 1812, but the St. Petersburg court continued to cling to the French language as le Roi Soleil still lives. Monarchy clings to tradition and is an irrational thing.

The Americans tried to tear Canada away while the British were at war with France (fail). For Americans, the "War of 1812" is their conflict with the British.
Of course, I was referring to Napolon's 1812 invasion of Russia.
The defeat of Napoleon led to the growth of national-patriotic sentiments in the Russian elite and increased interest in the “folk” theme (+ the influence of German romanticism). But not so much that the Court stopped speaking French.
